Earl Spencer Applauds Prince Harry’s Legal Victory and Apology for Princess Diana
Earl Charles Spencer has commended Prince Harry for achieving justice for their late mother, Princess Diana. This follows the Duke of Sussex’s legal settlement with News Group Newspapers (NGN), the publisher of *The Sun*, which issued a formal apology for unlawfully intruding into Diana’s and Harry’s private lives.
In a heartfelt statement, Diana’s brother praised Harry’s courage and resilience in challenging a major media organization.
“It takes an enormous amount of guts to take on powerful media outlets like this and incredible tenacity to secure a victory,” Earl Spencer said. “It’s wonderful that Harry also secured an apology for his mother—she would be immensely touched by this and rightly proud.”
As part of the settlement, NGN issued a "full and unequivocal apology" for the "serious intrusion into the private life" of both Princess Diana and Prince Harry. The Duke revealed that evidence indicated Diana was among the earliest victims of the publisher’s unlawful information-gathering practices, including hacking into her communications.
The apology comes 27 years after Diana’s tragic death at the age of 36 in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.
Prince Harry has been vocal about the damaging effects of media intrusion on his family. He described the legal victory as a significant step in holding the press accountable for the harm caused to his mother and others.
Earl Spencer’s remarks underscore the family’s enduring commitment to protecting Diana’s legacy and addressing the injustices she faced. This victory not only serves as a tribute to Diana’s memory but also reinforces the importance of standing up against unethical media practices.
