Meghan Markle’s Strict Employee Rule Revealed Amid Claims of ‘Terrible’ Boss Behavior
Meghan Markle has often spoken about her experiences and openness in communication, stating that she has "never had to sign anything that restricts [her] from talking." However, this freedom wasn’t extended to her employees.
In September of last year, former staff members, who remain anonymous, exposed troubling accounts of their time working with the Duchess of Sussex. They described her as a “terrible” boss, with one going as far as to call her the “dictator in high heels.” These claims have now been reinforced by a new Vanity Fair report, which suggests that while Meghan advocated for openness, she wasn’t as encouraging when it came to her employees speaking out.
One of the employees from Spotify revealed that working for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex required them to sign a nondisclosure agreement. This confidentiality clause was a necessity for anyone employed by the couple, particularly following the collapse of Meghan's Spotify deal in June 2023, which was marked by the end of their podcast, *Archetypes*, after just one season. Critics quickly labeled Harry and Meghan as “talentless” and “grifters” after the deal fell apart. Subsequently, Meghan entered into a new partnership with Lemonada Media to continue her podcasting journey.
According to the Spotify employee, Meghan and Harry’s approach to podcasting was far from conventional. “They didn’t do what celebrities do on podcasts, which is turn on the mic and talk. They wanted a big theme that would explain the world, but they had no ideas,” the employee explained.
Despite these setbacks, another source noted that some worthwhile projects never saw the light of day due to “practical reasons” and the couple’s insistence on “silence from employees.”
An anonymous source also spoke of the Duchess's shifting demeanor. Initially, Meghan created a warm, friendly work environment, but this attitude would change when things went wrong. Even if it was a result of her or Harry's demands, Meghan would turn cold and withdraw her support. “It was really, really, really awful,” the source said.
“Very painful. Because she’s constantly playing checkers—I’m not even going to say chess—but she’s just very aware of where everybody is on her board. And when you are not in, you are to be thrown to the wolves at any given moment,” they added.
