Harry and Meghan Under Fire: Nigel Farage Takes a Swipe While Highlighting Duchess of Edinburgh

Nigel Farage Brands Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as "Wonderboy and Wondergirl" at Buckingham Palace Reception

Nigel Farage didn’t mince words during today’s Buckingham Palace reception, labeling Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as "wonderboy and wondergirl" while criticizing the couple for "disappearing off" to America. The Reform UK leader made the remarks after attending a special reception hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Farage accused the Duke and Duchess of Sussex of weakening the Royal Family’s workforce through their high-profile departure to the United States. The reception, held in the grand State Ballroom, welcomed more than 300 MPs, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and opposition leader Kemi Badenoch.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, along with the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, joined the King and Queen at the event. During the reception, Farage engaged directly with Prince Edward, sharing that he had "a very, very good chat" with the duke’s wife, Sophie. He praised Edward’s work ethic, telling him, "You are working jolly hard."

Speaking afterward, Farage commended the Edinburghs as "charming," noting that they "do a lot of heavy lifting because there's one or two gaps out there." He added, "It's been a difficult few years," referencing the challenges currently facing the Royal Family.

Farage elaborated on the factors contributing to these "gaps" in royal duties. "Wonderboy and wondergirl disappear off to America, the Queen dies, the King's not been well, Andrew's not in the public eye, Princess Anne is 74," he explained. The Reform leader highlighted how these circumstances have led to the Edinburghs taking on increased responsibilities, praising their performance and saying they were "doing it very well."

The reception marked a significant moment for new parliamentarians following the July 2024 election, which saw a record-breaking intake of MPs. A total of 335 newcomers entered Westminster, surpassing the previous record of 327 set in 1945. Additionally, 15 MPs returned to Parliament after periods of absence, bringing the total number of newly elected members to 350.

The event also welcomed peers appointed to the House of Lords following Their Majesties’ coronation in May 2023.

Farage’s comments have once again put the spotlight on the ongoing tensions within the Royal Family, particularly the impact of Harry and Meghan’s departure. While the Edinburghs continue to step up in their roles, the absence of the Sussexes remains a contentious topic, especially for critics like Farage.

As the Royal Family navigates these challenges, the reception served as a reminder of the enduring importance of their public duties—and the scrutiny that comes with them.
