Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Offer Advice Amid Concerns Over Social Media Policy Changes
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have shared their thoughts on the recent changes to social media policies in a statement posted on their website, expressing their deep concerns about the impact on free speech. The couple criticized a major social media platform for its new policies, which they believe undermine free expression.
In a joint statement, Meghan and Harry addressed the changes made by Meta to its 'Hateful Content Policies,' stating, "Meta’s changes do not protect free expression but instead foster an environment where abuse and hate speech silence and threaten the voices of whole communities who contribute to a healthy democracy."
The couple, who are parents to Archie and Lilibet, emphasized the importance of online spaces being designed with public safety and well-being in mind. They stressed that these platforms should be resilient against political pressures and corporate mismanagement.
Furthermore, Meghan and Harry called out the power social media companies hold in shaping public discourse, stating, “This latest move from Meta exemplifies a social media company—fully aware of their influence—disregarding its responsibility to ensure that power is not abused. Instead, they appear to let ego or profit, or likely both, guide decisions that affect billions of people.”
In their statement, the couple underscored the need for social media platforms to be held accountable for the impact they have on society, urging that user safety and the protection of free speech should be prioritized.
