Meghan Markle's Social Media Return Faces Uncertainty Just Two Weeks Later
Meghan Markle made a surprising return to social media earlier this year, marking her first appearance since marrying Prince Harry in 2018. The Duchess of Sussex, who was preparing for new projects, found herself back in the public eye just as California, her home state, was struck by devastating wildfires. These fires have ravaged thousands of acres, destroyed homes, and tragically claimed numerous lives.
In the wake of the disaster, Meghan and Harry stepped up to support a charity conducting relief work in Pasadena, even opening the doors of their Montecito home to offer shelter to friends and families affected by the calamity.
However, amidst the chaos caused by the Los Angeles fires, the Sussexes released a surprising statement on Monday, sharply criticizing Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook. Meghan had garnered over a million followers on her account after her social media comeback, with the number continuing to rise.
In their statement, Harry and Meghan took aim at Meta’s recent policy change, accusing the company of responding to “political winds.” Meta's new policy eliminates its fact-checking program, replacing it with a “Community Notes” system to clarify user claims on platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
The Sussexes argued that while “hundreds of millions” of people use Meta’s platforms to “spread joy, build community, and share empowering information,” this new policy goes “directly against” that mission.
“Unfortunately, Meta’s recent decisions go directly against its stated mission to ‘build human connection,’ and instead prioritize those using the platforms to spread hate, lies, and division at the expense of everyone else,” the statement read.
They further emphasized that online spaces must be designed with public safety and well-being as their core, and resilient against political pressure and corporate lapses in leadership.
“This latest move from Meta is an example of a social media company—fully aware of their power to shape public discourse—disregarding any responsibility to ensure that power is not abused, and instead allowing either ego or profit, likely both, to guide decisions that affect billions,” they continued.
This statement marks a bold declaration from Meghan regarding a platform she has worked with for years. However, despite her growing social media presence and ambitious future plans for her account, it remains uncertain whether Meghan will continue using her platform following this emotional and critical message.
