Prince Harry to Appear in UK Court as Legal Battle Takes New Twist Following His Statement
Prince Harry has issued a significant statement as his legal battle against the British newspaper group took a dramatic turn at the High Court in London on Tuesday.
The Duke of Sussex, alongside former senior lawmaker Tom Watson, is suing News Group Newspapers (NGN) over alleged unlawful activities conducted by journalists and private investigators working for its publications.
Harry’s case took on a new dimension as he seemed to distance himself from any financial motivation. In his statement, he made it clear that his pursuit is not about money but about uncovering the truth. This comes after other claimants chose to settle their cases, avoiding the risk of a multi-million pound legal bill— a consequence that could still apply even if they won, but rejected NGN’s settlement offer.
The younger son of King Charles III, who is scheduled to appear as a witness in February, spoke last month about the importance of the case: “One of the main reasons for seeing this through is accountability, because I’m the last person that can actually achieve that,” he stated.
Reports indicate that NGN has already paid out hundreds of millions of pounds to victims of phone-hacking and other illegal information-gathering activities, particularly linked to *News of the World*. The company has settled over 1,300 lawsuits involving various figures, including celebrities, politicians, sports figures, and ordinary people connected to high-profile events.
In earlier court filings, Prince Harry's legal team revealed that his older brother, Prince William, had also reached a settlement with NGN in 2020 for “a very large sum of money.”
