Prince William Takes Center Stage to Pay Tribute to King Charles

While the royal family may be known for their majestic titles and grand palaces, their choice of nicknames proves they are surprisingly relatable. During the Coronation Concert, a heartwarming moment showcased the affectionate and sometimes playful terms of endearment shared between Prince William, King Charles, and other royal family members.

As legendary singer Lionel Richie wrapped up his performance, Prince William stepped onto the stage to honor his father, King Charles. That’s when an adorable moment unfolded: Princess Charlotte, with her sharp eyes, spotted her father and exclaimed excitedly, “Look, there’s Papa!” according to a lip reader. The sweet moment melted hearts across the audience.

But the surprises didn’t end there. In his heartfelt tribute, Prince William referred to his father by the unexpected nickname “Par,” saying warmly, “We are all so proud of you, Par.” This term of endearment, used by both William and Harry since childhood, adds a personal and nostalgic touch to their bond.

The royal family is well-known for their charming and traditional nicknames. While many families stick to “Mom” or “Dad,” the royals prefer terms like “Mummy,” “Daddy,” “Papa,” “Par,” and “Mama.” King Charles, for instance, referred to Queen Elizabeth as “Mummy” or “Mama,” even during moments of profound grief. When his father, Prince Philip, passed away in 2021, Charles paid tribute to him as “Papa.” Similarly, after Queen Elizabeth’s passing, Charles lovingly called her “my darling Mama.” These tender words highlight the deep emotional ties within the royal family.

However, the royals also enjoy a playful side when it comes to nicknames. Prince William once shared an amusing childhood story about being nicknamed “Wombat” during a family trip to Australia. The name, inspired by the country’s beloved marsupial, stuck with him, though William admitted he wasn’t sure why he earned it—possibly due to his charm or mischievous grin.

The Prince and Princess of Wales, who have been together for over two decades, also have their own set of nicknames. William affectionately calls Catherine “darling,” while she calls him “babe.” On the funnier side, Catherine reportedly refers to William as “Baldy,” a playful nod to his receding hairline, while William teasingly calls her “Duchess of Diddle.” This nickname, inspired by Queen Elizabeth’s gentle critique, humorously references Catherine’s lack of a full-time career before marrying William in 2011.

The couple’s sense of humor doesn’t stop there. Royal author Tom Quinn shared that, like any couple, the Prince and Princess of Wales have their fair share of arguments, sometimes involving thrown objects. Yet their ability to laugh at themselves and each other seems to strengthen their bond.

Even King Charles and Catherine share sweet nicknames. Catherine privately refers to him as “Grandpa,” while Charles lovingly calls her “darling daughter-in-law” or “beloved daughter-in-law.”

From the tender “Papa” and “Par” to the playful “Wombat,” these nicknames remind us that beneath the grandeur and responsibilities, the royal family treasures their bonds and enjoys life’s simple joys—just like the rest of us.
