Meghan Markle Recalls Pandemic Hair Dye Fail That Sparked an Unexpected Friendship
A Relatable Moment Shared on Confessions of a Female Founder
Meghan Markle opened up in her podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder, about a personal and humorous moment from the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic—a boxed hair dye mishap that many can relate to.
Attempting At-Home Hair Dye During Lockdown
During the nationwide lockdown, Meghan and her family had just moved into a friend’s home in California. Like many others at the time, she attempted to manage her beauty routine from home—and decided to use boxed hair dye in hopes of achieving a salon-fresh look.
“I thought, ‘I’m gonna look just like she does on the box,’” Meghan shared candidly. “Instead, it was this very inky, almost Elvira-esque black hair.”
The Unexpected Outcome: Hair Horror to Heartfelt Connection
Instead of the glamorous brunette shade she expected, Meghan said the result reminded her of the dramatic gothic look of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Realizing the color was far from ideal, she reached out to her longtime stylist, Serge Normant—the same expert who styled her hair for her royal wedding.
“I texted Serge, and he said, ‘You need to see Kadi.’”
That referral led her to Kadi Lee, a professional hair colorist and entrepreneur, who helped correct the color mishap. What began as a quick beauty fix turned into something much more meaningful.
A Friendship Formed in Unlikely Times
Recalling the masked-up, socially distant conditions of that first visit, Meghan said,
“You came over. I mean, we were masked and all the things. It was such an interesting time, but I remember that day so well.”
Through that simple act of connection, a new friendship blossomed, showing that even during the most uncertain times, something positive can still grow.
