Prince Harry Awaiting Final Verdict in High-Profile UK Security Appeal Case

Prince Harry Awaits Court Verdict on UK Police Protection Appeal

Prince Harry awaits UK Court of Appeal verdict on his police protection request. Will the Duke regain security? Ruling expected May 2 at 2 p.m. local time.

Ruling Due Soon on Duke of Sussex’s Legal Fight Over Royal Security

Prince Harry is just hours away from learning the outcome of his long-running legal battle for police protection in the United Kingdom. The Court of Appeal is set to deliver its ruling on Friday, May 2, at 2 p.m. local time, at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, according to multiple media sources.

The Duke Challenges Security Downgrade Following Royal Exit

The case stems from a 2020 decision by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC), which downgraded Prince Harry’s access to state-funded security after he and Meghan Markle stepped back from senior royal duties.

Harry’s legal team has argued that the decision exposed him to heightened personal risk, particularly during visits to the UK. His legal counsel claims the decision-making process was flawed and lacked proper risk assessment protocols.

Legal Team Warns: “Prince Harry’s Safety Is at Stake”

During the court hearing in April, barrister Shaheed Fatima KC emphasized the severity of the issue, stating:

“His safety, security, and life are at stake.”

She further argued that the Sussexes felt they had no choice but to step away from royal life due to insufficient protection and support. Following the downgrade in protection, Harry was reportedly subjected to an assassination threat, further underscoring the legal team's concerns.

Lawyers Criticize “Bespoke Security Model” as Inadequate

Prince Harry’s attorneys also challenged the “bespoke” security arrangement developed by RAVEC, stating that it sidestepped expert recommendations and proper procedures.

“The appellant does not accept that ‘bespoke’ means ‘better’,” Fatima told the court.

The legal team questioned the fairness and transparency of the decision-making process, calling it inconsistent with how security risks should be handled for individuals in high-profile positions.

UK Government Defends Decision as Lawful and Proportionate

The Home Office, however, has stood by its original decision, arguing that the bespoke model was tailored to Prince Harry’s current non-working royal status. Their legal team insisted the arrangement was lawful and struck a balance based on the "totality of the circumstances."

“The appellant's case ignores the totality of the picture,” they said, defending the revised approach.

What Happens Next?

The ruling from the Court of Appeal will clarify whether Prince Harry will regain official UK police protection or if the existing arrangements will remain in place. The outcome could set a significant precedent regarding how former royals are treated when it comes to state-funded security and public protection measures.
