Just before his 100th birthday, the Duke of Sussex had a very poignant moment with Private Joseph Hammond, a Ghanaian WWII veteran from Ghana.
Invictus Medal Coin Given to Private Hammond: A Significant Gift
Private Joseph Hammond received a special present from Prince Harry on Saturday, May 7; it was the Invictus Medal Coin, a symbol of the Invictus Games, an initiative Harry started to assist injured soldiers. Hammond expressed thanks on X (previously Twitter):
Welcoming the @WeAreInvictus squad to Ghana just before my birthday this Saturday was a tremendous honour! I was grateful to get the Invictus Medal Coin from #PrinceHarry.
Thoughtfully returning, Hammond presented Prince Harry a copy of his memoir in recognition of Harry's constant commitment to the welfare of veterans.
A Royal Gesture of Remembrance: Tribute by King Charles and the Royal Family
While Prince Harry discussed his own relationship with Private Hammond, other members of the royal family honored WWII veterans. On May 7, King Charles, Queen Camilla, and other royals went at a commemorative ceremony at Westminster Abbey marking the 80th Anniversary of VE Day. The official social media of the royal family shared an emotional message:
