According to royal author Hugo Vickers, speaking on The Sun’s podcast alongside royal experts Matt Wilkinson and Samara Gil, there are multiple reasons why Prince Harry never met his father-in-law in person.
“Why did Thomas Markle never meet Prince Harry?” Vickers questioned. “There could be several explanations. One theory is that Meghan may have been embarrassed by her father, which, if true, is rather unfortunate.”
Meghan’s Concerns About the Private Call
Another possibility, Vickers added, is that Meghan believed something troubling happened during that important private call. Allegedly, when Prince Harry called Thomas Markle to ask for his blessing to marry Meghan, Thomas replied, “You can marry her as long as you never raise your hand against her.” This unusual statement reportedly causes discomfort, suggesting a cultural gap that may have intensified family tension.
Although Vickers dismissed that reasoning as far-fetched, he didn’t rule out a more personal theory: that Meghan feared her father would warn Prince Harry about her. “Maybe she was worried he might say, ‘This is not the woman you think she is,’” Vickers added.
Was Thomas Markle Left Out Deliberately?
Despite these speculations, Vickers believes Thomas Markle should have been included in the royal ceremony. “Even if he couldn’t walk Meghan down the aisle, he should have been seated there,” he noted. “He did a great deal for Meghan, and she acknowledged that before distancing herself.”
Royal expert Samara Gil echoed that sentiment, highlighting the public pressure Thomas Markle faced. While Prince Harry and Meghan often speak about their need for privacy, Gil pointed out that Thomas was “hounded” by the media, which reportedly forced him to retreat from the spotlight—and even leave the country.
