Prince Harry’s memoir, released in January 2023, may have caused some tension with Netflix.
According to insiders, the streaming giant wasn’t thrilled that his explosive autobiography came out just weeks after their big documentary Harry & Meghan premiered in December 2022. Netflix reportedly worried the book would pull attention away from their flagship project, which had been a major part of their £75 million deal with the Sussexes signed back in 2020.
While the documentary performed extremely well, later projects from Harry and Meghan didn’t make the same splash. Some sources even claimed Netflix now sees the original deal — running until 2025 — as an “expensive failure.”
This week, however, both sides tried to hit the reset button. Prince Harry, Meghan, and Netflix announced a new multi-year partnership. This new agreement is said to be worth far less than the original deal, but insiders say it carries little risk for Netflix and helps both parties save face.
In her statement about the renewal, Meghan said she and Harry are proud to continue working with Netflix, now expanding their collaboration to include her As Ever brand. She praised their partners and Archewell Productions team for creating meaningful, globally resonant content that aligns with their shared vision.
In short: Harry’s memoir release may have ruffled feathers at Netflix, but the two sides have chosen to move forward with a smaller, more cautious deal.
