From the beginning, Meghan Markle seemed to send subtle signs that royal life wasn’t quite for her. Though she officially joined the Royal Family in 2018 after marrying Prince Harry, her time as a working royal was surprisingly short—just 22 months—and filled with quiet acts of defiance.
Royal expert Richard Eden points out that during that short time, Meghan reportedly broke royal traditions over a dozen times, averaging one rule-break every couple of months. These weren’t necessarily loud or dramatic moments—but rather small, symbolic choices that hinted she wasn’t comfortable with the strict rules of “The Firm.”

Eden believes this behavior shows Meghan was consciously rebelling against the expectations of being a royal. According to him, she didn’t fully accept the unspoken "contract" of royal life—which includes putting public service first, and always putting the royal image before personal style, brand, or opinions.
