While they are due to leave the British royal family in the spring of 2021, the Sussexes would like to delay their departure.
"Megxit" is a saga worthy of a season of The Crown. The break between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from the monarchy was supposed to be effective from March 31, 2021. But after a year of transition, it seems the couple is now trying to postpone the divorce, reports the Daily Mail. According to the British newspaper, the Sussexes are requesting a further 12-month extension.
At the heart of this request is the couple's desire to be able to continue their patronages. Indeed, upon joining the royal family, Meghan was appointed patron of various organizations dedicated to women's empowerment and universal education. For his part, Prince Harry manages African Parks, an NGO responsible for national parks and the fight against poaching on the African continent. He has also headed the Invictus Games since 2014, a sporting competition, inspired by the Paralympic Games, for veterans and service members injured in the line of duty.
Keen to retain control of their organizations, the couple therefore wishes to renegotiate the terms of their departure. According to The Sun, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expected to hold a meeting with the rest of the royal family via Zoom video conference sometime in January. The newspaper reports that the royal family will review the couple's request to ensure it "respects Her Majesty's values."
Despite the situation, The Sun reports that Princess Diana's younger son is expected to return to the UK in 2021 for several events. Queen Elizabeth II will celebrate her 95th birthday in April, followed in June by Prince Philip's 100th birthday. Finally, it is difficult to imagine Prince Harry missing the unveiling of the statue of Princess Diana on July 1st, on what would have been her 60th birthday.
