The Duke and Duchess of Sussex know exactly what they want for their children's future and have already taken a step in that direction with their foundation.
When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle expressed their desire to combine royal service with private activities to generate income and not live on royal allowances—a decision that ultimately led to the couple stepping back from their roles as senior members of the British royal family—they already had big plans for their new life.
Netflix contracts aside, which have provided them with a significant financial boost, their intention was to continue their charitable and philanthropic work in the royal style, but on their own terms and in their own way. And so, their Archewell Foundation was born, established in late 2020, and into which the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have poured much of their energy
Five years later, they have much to celebrate and changes to announce. To begin with, the organization announced on its official website that it has changed its name, or rather, added a surname. From now on, it will be called Archewell Philanthropies.
But there's more, because Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are already preparing for a future in which they want their children, Prince Archie, born in 2019, and Princess Lilibet, who came into the world in 2021, to play a part.
"After five wonderful years, the Archewell Foundation is becoming Archewell Philanthropies. This charitable entity allows the couple and their children to expand their global philanthropic efforts as a family," the foundation stated on its official website.
"Archewell Philanthropies houses the charitable work of Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as they expand their global philanthropic efforts to achieve meaningful reach and maximum impact," the organization added.
In this way, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle want to shape their children's future, the path they wish them to take when they grow up. By speaking of working with their foundation as a family, they make it clear that the plan is for Archewell Philanthropies to be a family affair for all four Sussexes.
Thus, Archie and Lilibet Diana will act as princes in some ways, in the style of their parents, who in certain public appearances seem as if they have never left the British royal family.
Although it is true that they have left, and despite the rapprochement between Charles III and Harry, which included a visit from the son to his father at Clarence House, things remain tense, and certain public appearances by the Sussexes are not well-received at Buckingham and Kensington Palace. This unease often arises during Harry and Meghan's royal tours, such as their visits to Nigeria and Colombia.
It is possible that when Archie and Lilibet grow up, they will choose private careers far removed from their parents' work, but at least Harry and Meghan intend to involve their children in their activities from a very young age so that they will follow in their footsteps when they are older.
Furthermore, although they initially stated that they did not want titles for their children, as soon as Charles III ascended the throne and Archie and Lili became Prince and Princess of Sussex, respectively, the Duke and Duchess claimed them.
To get things started, Harry and Meghan have taken their children to prepare food for people in need. This happened in November 2025 after Archewell partnered with Our Big Kitchen in Los Angeles. They both want their children to be involved in these kinds of activities from a young age and, in the future, also with the foundation.
The four Sussexes send holiday greetings without Christmas decorations
And on the same day this initiative was announced, Meghan Markle posted the Sussexes' holiday greeting on social media. It's a picture of the four of them in what is presumably the garden of their Montecito home. Harry is very affectionate with his son, while Meghan does the same with her youngest daughter.
To send holiday greetings, the Sussexes have followed the example of the Welsh royals and King Felipe and Queen Letizia and their daughters, who released a family photo without Christmas decorations—a style that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also seem to favor.
