Kate receives the Rugby World Cup (and the champions) in Windsor

They didn't just bring the cup home, the Red Roses brought it back to the castle too! As patron of the Rugby Football Union, the Princess of Wales hosted a reception on January 15th in honor of the England women's rugby team.

Before meeting the Princess of Wales at Windsor this Thursday, the players of the Red Roses, the England women's rugby team, and their staff were supposed to enjoy a guided tour of the thousand-year-old castle. But a bus breakdown unfortunately delayed them, forcing the cancellation of this sightseeing interlude so as not to keep the future queen waiting.

Kate, who quietly celebrated her 44th birthday last week, was indeed waiting for the players and their entourage in one of the reception rooms. The patron of the Rugby Football Union was dressed in a vibrant scarlet outfit, a striking nod to the Red Roses, of course. On the agenda: congratulations for their fabulous performance last autumn at the World Cup.

In September, the English women's rugby team beat Canada 33-13 in the final. And Twickenham Stadium erupted in celebration.

Earlier in the tournament, the mother of George, Charlotte, and Louis had gone to Brighton to cheer on the Red Roses from the stands for their match against Australia. After the victory, the Princess of Wales even went down to join them in the locker room for some post-match encouragement. They understand each other, like true competitors.

Today, with the World Cup trophy received amidst the gilded splendor of the castle, the focus was entirely on celebrating a prestigious title. As for the historical tour, that will have to wait...
