King Charles has long been known as a selective eater, with carefully defined preferences that palace staff were expected to follow precisely. From how fruit is prepared to what appears on his breakfast tray, nothing was left to chance.
Darren McGrady, who previously served as a royal chef, shared his experience in the Channel 5 documentary Secrets of the Royal Kitchen. According to McGrady, the King has always had a strong fondness for fresh fruit, particularly produce grown in his own garden at Highgrove.
Among his favourites, plums ranked highest. As part of his daily breakfast, Charles was to be served exactly two plums, accompanied by a small amount of juice. The instructions to kitchen staff were explicit and non-negotiable.
McGrady recalled that each morning he would send in a bowl containing two plums. However, the same thing happened repeatedly. The King would eat just one plum, leaving the other untouched. The unused fruit would then be returned to the kitchen, where it was saved for later use.
Noticing this pattern, the chef decided to test a small adjustment. Reasoning that only one plum was ever eaten, McGrady sent the breakfast tray with a single plum instead.
The change did not go unnoticed.
According to McGrady, the attending waiter soon returned with a clear message from the dining room, politely asking whether His Royal Highness could have two plums instead. From that day forward, the chef says he continued sending two plums every morning, exactly as instructed.
The story highlights just how closely King Charles’ routines were monitored and maintained, even down to something as simple as fruit at breakfast. It also underscores the discipline expected within royal kitchens, where tradition and instruction often outweigh practicality.
Meanwhile, King Charles, now 77, continues to recover following a cancer diagnosis revealed in 2024. While details about his condition have remained private, the monarch has gradually resumed public duties, supported by close family and staff.
As this account shows, even during quieter moments behind palace doors, King Charles’ preferences have always been taken seriously, reinforcing his reputation for detail, structure, and consistency in daily life.
