How Prince Harry’s Pal Is Protecting Him and Meghan Markle in the UK

Prince Harry is planning a long-awaited return to the UK with his wife, Meghan Markle, and ensuring their safety has become a top priority. One of the Duke’s closest friends has stepped in, taking significant steps to support and protecting the couple during this visit.

Since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan lost their automatic taxpayer-funded police protection. This decision has made protecting the couple during UK visits more complicated. Last year, Harry even lost a legal battle to reinstate full protection, emphasizing the need for alternative measures.

Despite this, Harry requested a comprehensive risk assessment from the Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, which was granted last December. The committee tasked with evaluating security measures was expected to meet in January to determine the appropriate level of police protection, highlighting the ongoing focus on protecting the Duke and Duchess.

Alex Rayner, a close friend who accompanied Harry on a North Pole charity trek in 2012, has voiced his support for protecting the couple. Rayner stressed that Harry’s military service, including tours in Afghanistan as a forward air controller and Apache helicopter pilot, makes him particularly vulnerable.

Rayner told the Daily Mail, “Harry is a royal who’s significantly served in the Armed Forces. To ask him to pay for protection privately feels a tiny bit spiteful, given that there are other Royal Family members who receive it while doing far less.” His statements emphasize the importance of protecting Harry and Meghan, especially during high-profile events.

Next year, the Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry to support injured and sick former soldiers, will take place in the UK. Harry hopes Meghan will accompany him this July to promote the event. Rayner highlighted the necessity of protecting the couple during such public appearances, noting Harry’s past military service and the demands of public life.

“This guy was flying Apaches in a conflict, and we’ve got the Invictus Games coming up in Birmingham,” Rayner said. “Are we not supporting him for that?” His remarks underscore the ongoing effort to ensure proper protecting measures are in place for the Duke and Duchess.

As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle prepare for their return to the UK, the focus on protecting them remains paramount. With close friends like Alex Rayner advocating for their safety and ongoing discussions with government officials, the couple’s security will be a critical element of their upcoming visits. Ensuring proper protecting measures not only safeguards them but also allows them to engage confidently in public events like the Invictus Games, reflecting their continued commitment to public service.
