Since announcing her engagement to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle has had to gradually adapt to her new life. But it seems there are certain things she's unwilling to compromise on, certain stylistic details, such as wearing trousers. Does the Duchess of Sussex adhere to protocol when she opts for this garment?
It's said that Queen Elizabeth II is quite strict on this matter. A member of the royal family, especially if she's a woman (she seems to be more lenient with her grandchildren), must dress appropriately for her role. Therefore, when Kate Middleton became engaged to Prince William, the Queen "called her to order." Apparently, during that famous tea they shared, Queen Elizabeth II spoke to her about certain stylistic details Kate should improve, such as cutting her hair (a woman in the British royal family should wear it at most shoulder-length) and banishing all skirts above the knee. She was also strict on another point: "Trousers, just the right length." It's not that this garment is forbidden, but rather that a skirt or dress is more appropriate.
In Meghan Markle's case, either the Queen has relaxed a bit (after all, Harry and Meghan won't ascend the throne) or the Duchess of Sussex has decided to forge her own path. For starters, she certainly hasn't cut her long hair. But there's also the issue of trousers. For the former actress, they're one of her favorite garments, and she refuses to sacrifice their comfort.
It can't have been easy for Meghan to leave her acting career and adapt to the strict protocol of the royal family. She's had help with this. The most important comes from her husband, of course. Harry knows how to dress to please everyone, both the Queen and the British public. And, therefore, he doesn't hesitate to advise her. But Markle has also had additional support. Apparently, the Royal Household has assigned Samantha Cohen, a member of Her Majesty's personal team, to Meghan's service. Meghan will work with Cohen for at least six months to avoid any protocol or etiquette mishaps.
However, it's true that despite listening to all possible advice, Markle doesn't want to change some of the most characteristic features of her style, including her preference for oversized trousers, which she finds comfortable and flattering, and understated black suits for more formal events. She did so most recently during the official trip to Dublin, where she opted for a black Givenchy suit. This past winter, for example, her go-to outfit consisted of wide-legged trousers and a wrap coat. And, incidentally, this earned her the applause of all the critics.
But Harry's wife knows that some things are non-negotiable. Wearing a hat, for instance, is a must for the Royal Family. Choosing a dress for an event attended by Queen Elizabeth II is also beyond question.
This coming autumn, we imagine Meghan will continue to adapt to her new life. But, of course, without giving up trousers. In her daily life and at more informal events with Prince Harry, the former Suits star will continue to choose her favorite look: wide-legged trousers and oversized coats. And, in fact, by staying true to her own style, she has become one of the most admired royals. Why change?
