Prince William’s Challenging Year Sparks Staff Frustration

Prince William reportedly frustrated his staff with a perceived lack of direction in his life.

In 2013, the Prince of Wales took what was described as a “transitional year,” stepping back from many royal duties and scaling down public appearances. This move led some to believe he was not fully embracing his responsibilities within the Royal Family.

Royal commentator Russell Myers, in his book William and Catherine: The Monarchy's New Era: The Inside Story, highlights this period, noting that William had stepped away from his role as an RAF search and rescue pilot.

“Officials presented the announcement as William entering a ‘transitional year,’ clarifying that he might not immediately take on additional royal commitments,” Myers explained.

However, behind closed doors, William’s approach reportedly irritated his aides. Senior staff worried that his behavior could make him appear lazy, particularly as both The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh continued performing royal duties well into their later years.

According to insiders, William seemed to believe he had the freedom to take his time figuring out his path, a perspective not shared by those helping manage his royal responsibilities.

Attempts to encourage him to accept more duties or participate in specific engagements were often met with resistance. “There was genuine concern that he lacked a long-term strategy and kept postponing decisions about his future role,” a former aide revealed.

Even when the official list of royal engagements was published each year, highlighting his reduced participation, it reportedly caused little concern for William, despite the embarrassment it sometimes created among staff.
