King Charles appeared somewhat distracted during his recent visit to the United States.
The monarch was seen looking uneasy at moments throughout the trip, which he is undertaking alongside Queen Camilla as part of an official engagement in the U.S. His visit comes at a time when tensions and recent unrest around the White House have drawn global attention.
Commenting on the King’s demeanor, body language specialist Bruce Durham from Huddle Culture told The Mirror that there was a noticeable shift in his usual conduct. According to him, King Charles has spent his entire life trained in formal royal behaviour, where protocol, etiquette, and disciplined public conduct are deeply ingrained in every action.
“What we are observing,” Durham explained, “is that on several occasions Charles does not appear fully present or focused on the situation. Shortly after arriving, we notice what is known as the ‘tortoise effect.’ He is highly experienced in such settings, knows exactly where to stand, and has been thoroughly briefed by his team. However, when Queen Camilla steps forward to greet Donald Trump, Charles lowers his head.”
Durham further described this “tortoise effect” as a subconscious response often linked to uncertainty, hesitation, or reduced confidence. He added that there is no clear reason for such a reaction in this context, given King Charles’ extensive experience with similar high-profile diplomatic events.
