Royal commentator Rob Shuter, writing for Substack, reports that Wintour was especially keen to have Kate attend, making what insiders describe as a very determined, personal effort to bring her to the event. Sources suggest Wintour sees the Princess of Wales as a standout figure who could immediately outshine other celebrities on the red carpet.
One insider noted, “Kate is the one celebrity Anna wants and cannot get. That is the obsession,” highlighting just how strongly Wintour values her potential presence.
The appeal, according to experts, goes beyond fashion. Kate’s possible appearance at the Met Gala is said to evoke comparisons to Princess Diana’s iconic 1996 attendance, when she wore a navy Dior slip dress paired with sapphire and pearl jewelry—pieces now closely associated with Kate Middleton herself.
However, another source clarified that the interest is not solely linked to Diana’s legacy. “This was never only about Diana. Anna wanted Kate because Kate is the ultimate prize,” the source explained.
These reports come shortly after rumors emerged that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were not invited to the Met Gala 2026. Some insiders have pointed to Meghan’s reportedly strained relationship with Anna Wintour as a contributing factor.
It has also been suggested that Wintour feels Meghan and Harry tend to “make everything about themselves,” with the Vogue editor allegedly unimpressed by the couple’s conduct since stepping back from royal duties.
