According to royal expert Richard Eden, writing in the Daily Mail’s Palace Confidential newsletter, there is growing unease about the King’s approach to the historic residence, which is currently undergoing major renovation work expected to be completed next year.
Eden claims that despite the refurbishment, Buckingham Palace may not serve as a residential home for the King and Queen. Instead, it is expected to be used mainly for official events and state functions, with no plans for the royal couple to reside there full-time.
A source cited by the commentator suggested that this shift represents a departure from long-standing tradition, prompting concerns about the symbolism of the monarchy’s presence in central London. Eden expressed that he is “worried for the future of the monarchy,” arguing that the decision could weaken the institution’s public image.
He further referenced historical leadership, noting that former Prime Minister Winston Churchill understood the importance of the monarch being physically present at the nation’s most iconic royal residence. Eden suggested that stepping away from this tradition during peaceful times could be seen as a significant misstep.
Interior designer and royal family acquaintance Nicky Haslam also weighed in, criticizing the idea of converting Buckingham Palace into what he described as a more administrative space. He argued that such a move would strip the building of its traditional grandeur and “magic,” adding that future monarchs, including Prince William, are unlikely to use it as a primary residence.
Meanwhile, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, have already established their family life away from central London. The couple relocated to Windsor in 2022 and currently reside at Forest Lodge, a large estate within Windsor Great Park. Reports indicate they have no plans to return to London as their permanent home.
