Following the blast, McBean spent around ten months undergoing rehabilitation at Headley Court Military Hospital in Surrey, working through the long recovery process as a double amputee.
During his recovery, he developed a friendship with Prince Harry, who visited him in hospital and remained in contact over the years. McBean has recalled that Harry supported him with visits, “Get well soon” cards, and even casual gestures like bringing him beer.
Now aged 39, McBean is raising funds through a GoFundMe campaign to obtain a prosthetic bionic arm. He hopes to travel abroad for advanced treatment that could significantly improve his independence and daily life after his injuries sustained in Afghanistan.
In his appeal, he explained that a bionic arm would be life-changing, helping him perform simple everyday tasks such as holding a cup of tea while opening a door or sharing moments with his children, including holding their hands. He described the opportunity as a long-held dream for both him and his family.
