Has the British media been racist against Meghan Markle?
Black personalities have supported the young woman, now based in Canada and the target of recurring criticism from the tabloids.
LETTER FROM LONDON
Meghan and Harry's choice to step down from their roles as 'Royals' has caused a media storm in the UK. And the dust is far from settled, three weeks after their shocking announcement: we still do not know in detail the arrangements planned to finance their security in Vancouver (Canada), Meghan's father, the strange Thomas Markle, continues to distill his confidences on television, while the media on both sides of the Atlantic recount stolen or authorized photos of his daughter ...
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s move has been met with resentment in the tabloids, which have widely denounced their alleged ingratitude to the Queen. It sparked another debate, even more sensitive, also far from over: Was the British media racist towards Meghan, mixed race, black by her mother? Wasn't it because of this treatment that the 38-year-old American actress fled the UK to Canada, where she lived for seven years during the filming of the Suits series in Toronto?
Racism in disguise
The reproach is not new. In November 2016, Prince Harry had already complained that his “friend Meghan Markle [they were not yet married] was the victim of a wave of abuse and harassment, such as (…) the racist overtones of certain columns and frankly sexist and racist comments on social networks ”. Their wedding, celebrated with great fanfare in Windsor in May 2018, and the obvious joy that the British expressed at the time, for some time removed the bitterness.
But, in 2019, the media were again very critical of the couple, pointing to the public money he had spent on the redevelopment of his vast Frogmore cottage (£ 2.4 million, or 2 , 8 million euros). Or the repeated flights in private jets, while Meghan and Harry multiply the speeches on global warming.
