Meghan Markle and Wallis Simpson, the two Americans who became a threat to the British royal family
Since Edward VIII abdicated in 1936 to marry the socialite Wallis Simpson, such news has not been seen at Buckingham Palace
Since Prince Harry married Meghan Markle in May 2018 after a brief affair, on more than one occasion the British press compared the Duchess of Sussex with that of Windsor, Wallis Simpson (1896-1986), another famous American and Divorced who became part of the royal family by marrying the former King of England, Edward VIII.
This was one of the biggest scandals of the first half of the 20th century. It was the year 1936, and 325 days after having ascended to the throne of the United Kingdom (before being crowned), King Edward VIII read his resignation live on the BBC in London.
And is that, Edward VIII fell in love with Wallis Simpson, a socialite from Pennsylvania, United States, twice divorced. The decision to propose marriage caused a deep crisis. Even the Parliament did not accept their marriage.
But Edward VIII decided to follow the path of love, and by choosing Wallis Simpson, he abdicated the throne and was succeeded by his younger brother, George VI, who was the father of Queen Elizabeth II.
The controversial couple were married on June 3, 1937 at the Chateaux de Tours, in France, without the presence of the other British royal family. The press indicated that the harmful influence of Wallis Simpson made her husband renounce the throne and another kind of parallel court will be created. At least, on the international jet-set circuits they were treated as the "Dukes of Windsor", although they later went into exile in Paris, at their home in Bois de Boulogne.
Now, the story with Meghan Markle repeats itself in a sense. Curiously, the Dukes of Sussex moved last year to Frogmore House, 35 kilometers from London, the house where the controversial Duchess of Windsor is buried and in which they spent 2.4 million pounds of taxpayer money to renovate it, although now it seems that they will not inhabit it.
Even Meghan Markle is blamed for the same thing that Wallis Simpson was once blamed for: for undermining the royal house with his controversies.
When Meghan appeared on the scene with Prince Harry, various voices in the media assured that the young American actress would bring a fresh air to the British crown. However, that apparent fresh air has been transformed into a media hurricane that has shaken the relationship between the monarchy.
After Lady Di's death in 1997, Harry and Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, were always very close. But in the last year, the emotional estrangement with his older brother has not only sparked family feuds, especially between Meghan and Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, but separate marketing and communication teams have also been created for the two families living in different residences. In fact, most of her social and philanthropic activities are already done separately.
The peculiar character of the former protagonist of the series Suits has made a dent in certain habits of her husband. While Harry was governed by the conservative code of the royal family, Meghan is governed by a more leftist and liberal ideology.
If hunting is an ancient tradition in the Windsors, it only took a couple of years for the Duchess of Sussex to lower his head, and not precisely as a sign of courtesy, but in a daunted way to please her. In fact, in 2018, the prince no longer attended the traditional hunt for the grouse (a beautifully plumaged bird shaped like a turkey) at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
In addition, according to the tabloid Express, Queen Elizabeth II was very upset with Meghan when she found out that she wants to feed her son Archie a vegan diet, instead of traditional English cuisine. She also did not approve of their trips in private jets that represent an increase in air pollution when the Windsors label themselves as environmentalists. As well as the different rudeness that the young woman has professed to her real figure.
One of them at the beginning of last September, when Meghan did not attend the Highland Games in Balmoral to travel to New York to see her friend, the multi-champion tennis player Serena Williams, play in the final of the US Open. And the last of them, at the end of 2019, when Meghan and Harry decided not to spend the Christmas and New Years holidays with the royal family, in order to get away from the media spotlight for a season after confessing in a documentary, shot.
These types of actions have undermined the relationship between the Queen and the Duchess of Sussex; Despite the numerous existing images of the public complicity between grandmother and political granddaughter, behind the doors of the Palace it seems to be different.
Although, unlike King Edward VIII, Prince Harry is sixth in the line of succession, the news of the withdrawal of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to the United States has not sat well at Buckingham Palace, according to the BBC. Apparently, Harry and Meghan have once again acted on their own without first consulting with the sovereign Elizabeth II.
From this, several questions have been raised in the press. Security first: Will they continue to need an escort? Second on an economic level: Is a job in an NGO going to give you enough resources to support a family and live between two countries on different continents?
According to Celia Meza, a Spanish journalist for the daily La Razón and a UK policy specialist, Harry and Meghan have “savings” on which they could live. The prince's net worth is estimated to be around 30 million pounds, of which 20 million he inherited from his mother Lady Di and 7 million from his great-grandmother, the "Queen Mother."
While Meghan has a net worth of around 4 million pounds, having earned 40,000 per episode on series Suits. Earning £ 150,000 per film appearance and fashion collaborations. Also, her blog Tig is worth £ 60,000 a year.
Another big question: are they going to keep the title of Duke and Duchess of Sussex? If they resign, they will no longer have to follow a protocol.
For now, the British have already named the withdrawal of Harry and Meghan from the royal family: "The Megxit."
