Meghan Markle vs Kate Middleton, the wedding dress compared (and all the differences)
Meghan Markle's Givenchy wedding dress was in the name of simplicity, Kate Middleton's in the name of romance, here are all the details that made them different and ... Iconic.
After months as a full designer, Meghan Markle walked into St. George Chapel wrapped in a stunning white silk dress designed by Givenchy's artistic director Clare Waight Keller and married her Prince Harry (see here all the highlights of the Royal Wedding 2018).
Even in the choice of the wedding dress, Meghan Markle gave a little shake to the tradition of British royal brides, because a UK designer is usually chosen to support the British fashion system. It was like this for Queen Elizabeth, for Princess Margaret, for Lady Diana and of course for Kate Middleton who had chosen Alexander McQueen for her Royal Wedding on April 29, 2011. Meghan, on the other hand, while choosing to create the dress with Clare Waight Keller, relied on the timeless style of Givenchy.
But "protocol" aside, it is impossible not to compare Meghan Markle's wedding dress with that of Kate Middleton, one of silk, ultra linear without lace or embroidery (veil aside), the other - that by Kate Middleton - in lace, with a wide skirt and long sleeves.
Here are all the differences!
The veil
Both Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton opted for an important train, but unlike Kate who chose a short veil in 2011, Meghan Markle walked the aisle with a 5-meter veil with symbolic decorations representing the states of the Commonwealth.
Also as regards transparency, the two veils appear very different, Kate's lighter, Meghan's more "opaque".
The sleeves
Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle chose a dress with fairly similar sleeves, but while Meghan Markle's Givenchy wedding dress had very opaque three-quarter sleeves (because of the same silk cady as the rest of the dress) Kate Middleton had long, but sheer lace sleeves.
The neckline
Both dresses had a defined waistline and a fuller skirt, but it is the neckline where the most significant difference can be seen. No lace for Meghan Markle who chose a bateau neckline without any ornament, in the name of the linearity of the dress created with only six seams. In contrast, Kate Middleton's wedding dress had a mandarin collar that opened into a v-neck, all in lace, which revealed the white bodice.
We don't know about you, but we can't choose which dress we like best, but one thing is certain: this decade has given us two very special royal brides.
