Presidential elections 2020 live: Biden wins Trump and is already the new president of the USA
The Democratic candidate will be the new tenant of the White House for the next four years after defeating Donald Trump in the elections.
Joe Biden is the new president of the United States. It will be, in fact, the one that has had the most votes in history, even ahead of those that Obama had in 2008. Biden, a Democratic candidate, unseats Donald Trump, a Republican representative and who has been known as POTUS (President of the US) the last four years.
This time, the tycoon could not surprise. Ultimately, the defeat in Pennsylvania was too much, although Trump has promised war in the courts and has thousands of fans aroused on the American streets, shouting "Stop the Count." But in the purely official and far from Trump's always thunderous moves, Biden is the winner.
Politician with extensive experience
The new president, 77 years old, is a politician with a long career. Born on November 20, 1942 in Scranton (Pennsylvania), he is the son of car salesman Joseph R. Biden and housewife Catherin Eugenia Finnegan.
He studied in the state of Delaware, where he graduated in History and Political Science in 1965. Three years later he graduated from Syracuse Law School in New York. Lawyer from 1969, and later a member of the New Castle County Council and made the leap to the front line of politics.
He was a senator from Delaware between 1973 and 2009, and has been a permanent figure among Democrats for more than four decades. Before 2020 he had already tried to be president. The first time, in 1998, he was frustrated by a hospitalization, after which he withdrew from the presidential race, although he had also been accused of plagiarism in an electoral speech.
The second time was in 2008, in the presidential elections that Obama won, although he was finally included as second in that candidacy and held the vice presidency of the United States. During the eight years he held the position, Biden was in charge of bringing positions closer to Republican legislators when it came to passing some laws, such as the one that ended up raising the debt ceiling in 2011.
He did not appear in the 2016 elections, but decided to run as a candidate for the 2020 elections, with Bernie Sanders being his greatest rival. Now, he will occupy the White House for the next four years and will be accompanied by Kamala Harris, the first African-American vice president in the country's history.
States where the Democrats have won
After several days counting votes in some states, this Friday his victory was known. For the moment, and in the absence of some scrutiny, the Democrats have won in the following territories: California (55 electoral votes), New York (29), Illinois (20), Pennsylvania (20), Michigan (16), New Jersey ( 14), Virginia (13), Washington (12), Arizona (11), Massachusetts (11), Minnesota (10), Maryland (10), Wisconsin (10), Colorado (9), Connecticut (7), Oregon ( 7), New Mexico (5), Hawaii (4), New Hampshire (4), Rhode Island (4), Delaware (3), District of Columbia (3), Vermont (3), Maine (3) and Nebraska ( 1).
Donald Trump mobilized his voters to vote in person, which led him to lead the vote as soon as the election day ended and even to proclaim himself president. But what has ultimately tipped the balance in Biden's favor has been the large number of vote-by-mail.
This has allowed him to turn around in some key states, especially Pennsylvania, which has been the one that has given him the key to the White House. Other territories in which it was below, such as Nevada or Georgia, may cause a greater advantage when they finish counting all the remaining votes, since it is currently in the lead in the absence of the official announcement by the authorities.
When the transfer of power occurs
Unless the courts say otherwise, the transfer of power between both administrations will take place on January 20. On that date is when the current term of Donald Trump ends, who will thus give up the witness to Joe Biden and will put the Democratic party on top again.
