Not just Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, Hollywood's worst divorces
The nightmare separation of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard is just the latest in chronological order. From Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, there are many former golden couples who said goodbye amid tears, battles, insults and poisons
These days Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, at the High Court in London, are staging one of the worst divorces in Hollywood, with hearings peppered with grotesque details about a nightmare marriage of violence, blood, alcohol, drugs and degradation. Their vitriolic separation, however, in Hollywood is only the latest in chronological order. Many stars, when they said goodbye, staged battles worthy of the film The War of the Roses.
For example, the diatribe between Woody Allen and Mia Farrow has been going on for decades - and it's not over yet. It all started in 1992, when Mia discovered that Allen was having an affair with her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn, 19 years old at the time (the director was 35 years older). The break was immediately turbulent, between the legal battle for the custody of the three children Moses, Dylan and Ronan, and the heaviest accusation: that of having molested Dylan on August 4, 1992 (accusations that Dylan then spoke about for the first time in 2014 in a long letter to the New York Times). The director has always denied everything, arguing that the child was "totally plagiarized" by her mother, who was angry at the time over the Soon-Yi affair. Dylan recently reiterated the harassment suffered, while Soon-Yi defends Allen with a drawn sword: "The real monster is my mother Mia."
Final poison also for Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin. The rags flew during the divorce in 2002, with the couple arguing over practically everything, starting with the custody of their daughter Ireland, and never missed an opportunity to tell each other about it: Basinger came to compare her ex-husband to Saddam Hussein; he, in book A promised to ourselves, described his ex-wife as "a cold and relentless animal that seems to come to life only when surrounded by his lawyers".
Even Guy Ritchie, when he separated from Madonna in 2008, was not kind to his ex. He accused her of turning into a "selfish cow" and said they hadn't had sex for over eighteen months. The fault of her obsessive obsession with her body, which she subjected to grueling four-hour training sessions a day, so much so that the rare times the two were together with him seemed to "squeeze a piece of cartilage".
Tom Cruise, then, was able to become the protagonist of two vitriolic divorces. In 2001, shortly after Nicole Kidman was announced to leave, the star lost his aplomb referring to his marriage as "a hell without passion". Kidman retaliated by publicly teasing the star with the height complex: "Finally I'll be able to wear heels!" She declared at the Venice Film Festival. Years later, relations between the two are still bad and the actress has spent a lot of time without contact with Connor and Isabella, the two children she had adopted with Tom. Cruise's 2012 breakup with Katie Holmes, full of clauses and dark sides, was no better. Katie left Los Angeles to move to New York with their only daughter Suri, who according to the American press hasn't seen her father in seven years. Several tabloids claim that the Church of Scientology would have turned him away from Suri. But there is no confirmation. After all, we have known less and less about Tom for years.
Britney Spears let Kevin Federline know that she wanted to divorce after three years of marriage with a text message. The message reached the rapper while he was in front of the cameras of a TV program, and of course the scene ended up straight on Youtube. It was 2006. Fourteen years have passed since then but the two continue to fight over custody of their children Sean Preston and Jayden James.
The divorce between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie is also stormy. When they said goodbye after eleven years together in 2016, there were soon the first allusions to Brad's alcoholism and rumors of a violent argument with his eldest son Maddox during a trip on a private jet on September 14, 2016, with Pitt ending up under. investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department into "child abuse" (and later cleared by the FBI). Brad stopped drinking today. And after years of legal battles, his rebirth also led to an important qualitative leap in relations with Angelina, who during the quarantine allowed her six children to commute between their own home and that of their ex.
