Criticism rained on Twitter of Melania Trump for campaign against bullying
First Lady Melania Trump praised her #BeBest anti-bullying campaign, prompting critics to point out that her husband recently incited a violent riot in the United States Capitol that resulted in the deaths of five people.
"As the legacy of #BeBest comes to an end in the White House, we must continue to give a voice to the children of our nation and the issues that affect their lives," Melania Trump wrote on Twitter. "It is the values and spirit of the American people that inspired Be Best, and it is those values that will carry out its mission."
The First Lady's tweet was sent alongside a video in which she said the campaign was "inspired by compassion, strength and kindness."
US pastor and political commentator John Pavlovitz responded to the tweet, calling Donald Trump the "biggest bully on the planet."
"You have married the biggest bully on the planet, whom you saw publicly and perpetually harassing people on social media to such a degree that millions were physically and emotionally traumatized, and many died," he wrote. "It will be a pleasure to see you go."
Other users responded to the tweet with images of the gallows built by Trump supporters outside the United States Capitol on the day of the insurrection.
Dave Weissman, a former Trump supporter and member of the Republican anti-Trump campaign "Lincoln Project," condemned Melania for failing to speak out against the rioters.
"#BeBest is the greatest shame of a policy coming from First Ladies; your supporters stormed the United States Capitol attacking our Republic while you claim to be the best. You have not even condemned your husband for inciting these insurgents." wrote.
