Formerly Friendly, Now "Bromance" Trump and Pence at the Edge of the Horn
The relationship between US President Donald Trump and US Vice President Mike Pence is on the brink of collapse. Relations between the duo of leaders of "Uncle Sam's Country" were further strained when Pence said he did not have the power to overturn the 2020 US election results that made Joe Biden of the Democratic Party the next president.
Trump immediately became angry and expressed his frustration at Pence in a post on Twitter. Officials say Trump has spiraled out of control over the past few weeks as reported by Business Insider, Friday (8/1/2021). The officials added that Trump is now directing most of his anger at Pence, even though the current vice president is still loyal.
Earlier this week, Pence was said to have had lunch with Trump during which he tried to explain that he had no right to undo Biden's victory. Furthermore, in a letter on Wednesday (6/1/20201), he told Trump that he is keeping his oath as vice president and defending the US Constitution. "That my oath to support and defend the Constitution restricts me from claiming unilateral authority over which electoral votes to count and which not," said Pence. A source told The Wall Street Journal that Trump was furious when he heard that. don't want to be your friend - I want you to be vice president, "said the source, imitating Trump.
Also Wednesday, Trump shared his frustration on Twitter. "Mike Pence must come for us. And if not, it will be a sad day for our country," Trump said at the White House in his speech on Wednesday. Trump also offended Pence on Twitter by saying that Pence had the authority to reject the US election results. "If Mike Pence does the right thing, we win the election. He has the absolute right to do so, "Trump tweeted which was later blocked by Twitter. Pence does not have the power to prevent lawmakers from authorizing Biden's victory in the US election, despite Trump's claim to the contrary.
As Trump's supporters head for the Capitol Building, they shout boisterously, "Where's Mike Pence?" Pence is indeed in the Capitol Building. When Trump's supporters began storming the Capitol Building, Pence and members of the US Congress were relocated to safety. Hours later, after the unrest had subsided, he chaired a Congressional meeting that approved Biden as elected president and Senator Kamala Harris as elected vice president. Amid the chaos, Trump also met Pence's chief of staff, Marc Short. Trump also appears to blame Short for advising Pence to authorize Biden's win.
Trump blamed everyone but himself
Because Trump continues to be the scapegoat lately, Pence can't stand it and makes his anger run high. In fact, Pence reportedly always looks calm. US Senate member from Oklahoma, Jim Inhofe, told Tulsa World he had never seen Pence so angry. "I had a long chat with him. He said, 'After all the things I've done for him,'" Inhofe said. A source close to Pence rhetorically asked CNN if Trump was worried that his supporters storming the Capitol Building could injure Pence or his family. ?
Earlier, Americans for Prosperity Chairman Tim Phillips told The Washington Post that Pence has a close relationship with Trump and a lasting relationship despite their differences in style and views. In the final days of his presidency, Trump began to leave his allies and colleagues one by one. In just the past 24 hours, US Education Secretary Betsy Devos, US Transport Secretary Elaine Chao and US Special Envoy for Northern Ireland Mick Mulvaney chose to leave their posts.
The US House of Representatives, whose majority is led by the Democratic Party, forced Pence to activate the 25th Amendment to remove the president from office and then take over the presidency on a temporary basis. So far, Pence has refused to ignore the proposal, Business Insider reports.
