In the aftermath of chaos at the Capitol Building, Chief of Staff Melania Trump resigns
Stephanie Grisham, former White House communications director and press secretary, now Chief of Staff of First Lady Melania Trump, submitted her resignation on Wednesday afternoon, January 6, 2021.
Grisham effectively resigned from the White House after violent protests broke out at the Washington DC Capitol Building on Wednesday local time.
"It is an honor to serve the country in the White House. I am very proud to have been part of Mrs. Trump's mission to help children everywhere, and proud of the many achievements of this Administration," Grisham told CNN in a statement.
Grisham is one of the Trump administration's longest serving officials, having started his tenure working for candidate Donald Trump in 2015 as a campaign manager for the press.
Grisham entered the White House as deputy press secretary under Sean Spicer, but in March 2017, Melania Trump hired him for her East Wing staff. As the director of communications for the East Wing, Grisham was then appointed as the first lady's most vocal staff to defend and even protect the interests of the first lady.
Apart from Grisham, White House social secretary Anna Cristina "Rickie" Niceta has also resigned from her post, a White House official told CNN.
Niceta has served as the Trump administration's only social secretary, serving since February 2017. Niceta is the second senior member of the East Wing to resign from her job following today's violent protests at the Capitol.
Meanwhile, the White House and the US First Lady Secretariat have yet to respond to the resignation of Stephanie Grisham and Niceta.
Previously, demonstrations that led to chaos took place at the Capitol Building, Washington DC, Wednesday local time. The masses of Trump supporters oppose Joe Biden's endorsement of victory and Congress's endorsement of Trump's defeat.
The masses acted anarchically by breaking through the doors of the Capitol and disturbing Congress to certify Joe Biden as elected president. Two of the Trump supporters were reportedly killed in the incident. Meanwhile, the endorsement of Joe Biden's victory as the next US president had to be postponed.
Additionally, in recent months, Grisham expressed his desire to live closer to family in the Midwest. (ase)
