Melania Trump's Parents Are Officially US Citizens
First Lady of the United States Melania Trump's parents are declared US citizens. Both of them underwent a naturalization ceremony in New York, on Thursday (9/8).
Their lawyer, Michael Wildes, said that the Slovenian couple had taken the citizenship oath at the Federal Immigration Court in New York.
"Citizenship has been granted," he said as reported by the AFP news agency.
When asked about Melania's role in supporting her parents' naturalization, Wildes said Viktor and Amalija had submitted their own application to become US citizens.
"Everything goes through a normal process. Like everyone here, you are allowed to apply for (US citizenship) after five years of having a Green Card," he said, adding that he did not know how long it would take Knavs to get through the citizenship process.
Trump has taken a tough stance on immigration policy. He has always been critical of immigration policies that enable Americans to help their families to live permanently.
Trump has stated that the policy is stealing American jobs and jeopardizing national security.
Viktor Knavs (74) previously worked as a car salesman in Slovenia, and Amalija (71) worked for a textile manufacturing company. After retiring, the two chose to spend time in the US with their daughter and grandchild.
