Melania and Ivanka Trump appeared unveiled as they stepped off the presidential plane in Saudi Arabia on Saturday. Donald Trump had yet firmly criticized Michelle Obama when she did the same.
Donald Trump's wife and daughter drew attention this Saturday in Saudi Arabia. The two women got off the presidential plane without a veil, in a country that advocates strict Islam. While the veil is compulsory for Saudi women, it is optional for foreigners, but refusing to wear it remains unappreciated.
Melania and Ivanka Trump have chosen to accompany the American president on his first visit abroad without wearing a veil. Ivanka Trump's husband Jared Kushner and the President's advisor Steve Bannon were also on hand.
When Donald Trump criticized Michelle Obama for this gesture
This scene is reminiscent of the arrival of the Obama couple in Saudi Arabia in 2015. Michelle Obama had also appeared hair in the wind, refusing to comply with Saudi customs. She had been applauded for this decision, but not by Donald Trump, who had sharply criticized her on Twitter.
"Many people say it was wonderful that Mrs. Obama refused to wear a headscarf in Arabia, but [the Saudis] were insulted. We already have enough enemies," he wrote on his account.
Many women politicians and First Ladies have already refused to wear the veil in Saudi Arabia. Among them, Laura Bush (in 2007), Angela Merkel (in 2010), Hillary Clinton (in 2012) or Theresa May, in 2017.
