Melania Trump is teasing us with her clothes
The first lady of the United States does not need Twitter (although she does), she sends messages through her clothes.
Melania Trump doesn't talk much. The first lady of the United States is little given to great speeches, she has given few interviews and her messages on Twitter from her are light years away from the vomiting words of her husband.
How to know then what goes through the head of the former Slovenian model? Her figure is full of enigmas and, in the absence of knowing the first lady well, the specialized press has tried to elucidate what Melania wants to tell us through her clothes.
Her closet (and the messages she sends about her) is not without controversy. Quite the opposite. On September 11, Donald and Melania shared an image to remember the victims of 9/11 and the coat of the first lady became the undisputed protagonist. The photo was taken at a 2018 Pennsylvania ceremony in memory of the bombing and for many critics of the marriage, the stitching on the garment appeared to simulate the impact of a plane against a tower.
If it had been an isolated case, she could remain an anecdote, but Melania's conflicting history with her closet goes back to before she even reached the White House. One thing seems obvious: the first lady doesn't want to go unnoticed, and her style choices prove it. In the words of Washington Post fashion chief Robin Givhan: "Melania dresses for what would be a fashion editorial of the event she attends."

It is not very clear if Trump wants to send certain messages, laugh at her husband, the press or the Americans themselves. The only thing that seems certain is that the first lady is taking the debate about her wardrobe with a sense of humor and that the negative opinions of her are quite equal. It is a sum and goes on. We review her choices most criticized by her, which she looks like will not be the last.
The pussy bow blouse
“When you are a star they let you do anything. Grab them by the cunt ”. It was October 2016, the elections were barely a month away and the Washington Post published a video in which Donald Trump, in an informal conversation, released this phrase that received a barrage of criticism. Two days later, Melania wore a Gucci pussy bow blouse at the presidential debate.
From her cabinet they said that the choice was not intentional, but what is seen in this type of event is never accidental. The blouse was the way to comment on the famous video: was it a criticism of her husband or a way to embarrass him in public? Only she knows.
The veil of discord in the Vatican
Images of Melania and Ivanka Trump during an audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican in May 2017 went around the world, and not for the better. The stylistic choices of both left much to be desired on a stylistic level, but the criticism did not stop there. It is common to wear a veil and wear black, as they did, in these types of audiences, so so far so good. The problem came because a few days before the first lady had not covered her head during a trip to Saudi Arabia, something that many saw as a lack of respect for the Muslim religion. Even more so when she followed the protocol before the highest representative of the Catholic faith.
High heels to visit a devastated area
In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey left the worst flooding on record in Texas to date. As usual, the president and the first lady traveled to the area to learn about the damage. What is not so common was the look chosen by Melania Trump to visit an area devastated by a hurricane: high heels, aviator glasses, bomber jacket and capri pants. The first lady was accused of being totally disconnected from the reality of those affected, of looking like Barbie to the rescue or of having left the Top Gun movie. Melania changed during the flight and got off the plane with trainers and a ponytail.
The suffragette suit
In her first public appearance in January 2018 after the accusations of Stormy Daniels, the porn actress who claimed to have had a relationship with Donald Trump, Melania chose a white Dior suit. It was during the State of the Union debate and her choice, once again, did not go unnoticed. Partly because Hilary Clinton made this outfit her own during the campaign and many personalities in America have worn it as a nod to early suffragettes. Was Melania silently protesting against her husband? Only she knows it, but, in an act in which everything is measured in detail, it does not seem like a coincidence.
I don't really care, do you?
With half the world in shock over the juvenile detention camps on the border between the United States and Mexico that had children in cages, Melania Trump decided to make a spontaneous visit to the area in June of last year. The first lady had good intentions, if it weren't for the parka she put on. A Zara model with a phrase that said: I really don’t care, do u ?, which could be translated as ‘I really don’t care, do you?’. An inappropriate choice for which she rained so much criticism that her press office was forced to come forward. Her husband could not let the crisis pass either and assured that his wife was laughing at the fake news, but he did not convince anyone.
The colonizing hat
As if the scandal of her jacket had not been enough, Melania stood on her first official tour of Africa in October with a hat that was the target of all the criticism. On a safari through Kenya, the first lady wore a helmet model, a symbol of white colonialism on the African continent. It was used because of the belief that the African sun affected the white brain more, leading to accuse Trump of having no idea of the history of Africa or, worse, of a total lack of respect.
Protagonist of My fair lady
For her visit to the United Kingdom this June, Melania shot the newspaper library, and what many saw as a tribute to Diana of Wales, for others it was a costume for the character of Audrey Hepburn in My fair lady. Once again, the first lady was accused of not taking her work seriously and of believing herself a Hollywood star rather than a diplomatic representative of her country.
