The good and bad of Trump ... udo

Using the issue of Mexico and its immigrants for political campaigning seems to be a very republican tradition. The event is expected, the press accepts it and makes a killing by reporting the case. The two Mexican communities, both here and there, immediately became desktop activists, and today, through social networks, we organize a fictitious revolution, a virtual protest that at least delights us and gives us the feeling to make use of our freedom of expression without leaving home.

For many of us, Donald Trump is no longer news. And it is that the 69-year-old billionaire again entered the race for the Presidency of the United States and argued, among many other nonsense, that he plans to make a new America. The circus lasted about 45 minutes. Trump came down an escalator and from his podium conducted the music he wanted to hear. Most notorious was his traditional criticism of the presence of Mexican immigrants. He called us rapists, drug traffickers and said that Mexico was not a friend of the United States. He used us.

The good news is that the response of many politicians and radio and TV hosts, moderate and liberal, including Republicans, ridiculed a businessman addicted to media attention. His hunger to be in the spotlight is unhealthy, but apparently it pays him good dividends. Trump knows that he will never be president, he is too smart to think otherwise.

The image of him is associated with the reality shows, his luxury buildings, his casinos, the dimes and diretes in which he has been involved as with the actress Rosie O'Donnell and his international beauty pageants. In conclusion, the figure of tycoon and presenter of him is the most outstanding. Even President Obama has taunted him at the annual correspondents dinner in Washington, D.C.

The downside of Trump's media event is that he continues a nativist tradition in the country. Secretly it has always existed and is accepted. But in this case it is alarming how she is exalted by some, viewed with good humor by others, and in the end his spiel will fade away without punishment, judgment or justification. After all, he only attacked the most vulnerable, those who never defend themselves. Many ignorant like Trump take his word for it, glorify him, and praise his jingoistic feat. These are the ones that should concern us.

FBI statistics show a dramatic increase in hate crimes against Latinos by civilians and police, mainly in rural communities. Unfortunately, hate groups are on the rise due to concerns against the undocumented. Trump's statements only encourage these crimes to continue to happen. Authorities should take these statements more seriously for this reason alone.

However. In Mexico, José Antonio Meade Kuribreña, Mexico's foreign secretary, considered Trump, now a presidential candidate, ignorant about the contribution that the migrant community makes to the United States. Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong, Secretary of the Interior in Mexico, said that Trump's statements that Mexicans are criminals were prejudiced, absurd and sought to generate more the media report than to produce a project. Both men represent Enrique Peña Nieto, President of Mexico.

To my liking, both representatives were very passive, they used only the required diplomacy and they are not aware of what it means and how it affects the reality of Mexicans here. Do you really think that the Chinese, the Japanese, the British or the Israelis would have responded with a simple statement like: "they are ignorant", I don't think so.

On the other hand and internally, do you think that the Afro-American community would have been as excited as the leaders of Mexico and other Latin nations who have not opened their mouths to show solidarity and express repulsion at wha t was expressed by the businessman / TV host?

Of course not. The problem is that the Latino leadership here is not prepared for something as fundamental as organizing an energetic rejection of the discriminatory act.

In a previous column more than two years ago, he talked about how it is possible that our Latino immigrant community in the US does not have a reaction group to this type of discrimination and xenophobia. He then suggested the need for an immediate response group that offers itself to opinion media and that has the credibility and support of the community. This is the link to the column:

I still think that the solution is to work on creating an organization that repels these attacks permanently and on time. A group such as the Jewish Community Anti-Defamation League, the NAACP for African Americans, or the GLAAD organization that defends the rights of the gay community. It is never too late to start. There will always be characters like Trump, Tom Tancredo, Steve King, journalists Lou Dobbs, Ann Coulter, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and other xenophobic figures of those calibers. They must be properly fought and educated.

If we start educating ourselves on how to defend ourselves first and then educate those who always take advantage of our quiet community, we will be doing a great work for future generations. Let's do it.
