Prince Philip died at 99

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and husband of Queen Elizabeth II, died this Friday, April 9, 2021 at the age of 99.

The "rock" of Elizabeth II is no more. Terrible news for the Queen and the United Kingdom: Prince Philip died at the age of 99 on April 9, 2021. It was Buckingham Palace which announced the Duke of Edinburgh's disappearance.

For several years, his health had been failing. In the summer of 2017, he officially announced his retirement after a first hospitalization for "an infection caused by a pre-existing pathology". Suffering from a heart problem for years, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II had a stent inserted in 2011. Weakened by a car accident in early 2019, Prince Philip was hospitalized on the 20 December 2019. In the greatest discretion, the Duke of Edinburgh had been admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London on a "preventive basis". In early 2021, he was again hospitalized in London a few weeks after being vaccinated against Covid-19 and after months of isolation with the queen.

Born June 10, 1921 in Mon Repos on the Greek island of Corfu, he was the only son of Prince André of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg. After spending part of his childhood in France, he moved to the United Kingdom in 1928 where he joined the Royal Navy. After falling in love with Elizabeth, Prince Philip asked her for her hand in the summer of 1946. They were married with great fanfare in Westminster Abbey on November 20 of the following year in front of millions of spectators and viewers. On February 6, 1952, he officially became Prince Consort upon the accession to the throne of Queen Elizabeth II. The couple had four children: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. Prince Philip was particularly known for his outspokenness, his humor but also his words which sometimes made the headlines.

Elizabeth II: "He was my strength and my support"

Like Queen Elizabeth II, he was fluent in German and French and still had some rudiments of Greek. Founder of WWF United Kingdom, like his wife, he was passionate about riding, a sport he practiced until his death. Suffering from several health problems, he therefore retired from public life in 2017. After that date, he had been keen to be present at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, in May 2018, then at that of the Princess Eugenie of York and Jack Brooksbank, five months later. In 2011, Queen Elizabeth II said of him: "He is my rock. He has simply been my strength and my support". It is therefore without him that she will have to continue to reign.
