Prince Philip's funeral: why William and Harry will be separated

The funeral of Prince Philip, who died Friday April 9, will take place on Saturday April 17, at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. Only around thirty people will attend, including the grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth's husband, William and Harry, who will not appear side by side, however.

There was no question that he would miss his grandfather's funeral. On Sunday April 11, Prince Harry left the United States for England, to attend the funeral of Prince Philip, who died on Friday April 9. He left Meghan Markle in Los Angeles, with their (almost) two-year-old son Archie. Pregnant with their second child, she followed the advice of doctors recommending that she not travel within a few weeks of her term. Since then, Prince William's little brother has been confined to Frogmore Cottage - where he lived before leaving London.

He will have to perform a PCR test before going to Prince Philip's funeral, scheduled for Saturday March 17, at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. A funeral, the organization of which was a headache for Buckingham Palace. And for good reason: health crisis requires, only thirty people will attend - mostly members of the royal family, and members of the Prince Consort's family.

Harry and William separated by their cousin Peter Phillips

The coming of Prince Harry posed another problem. By retiring from the royal family, he lost his royal and military titles. He can therefore no longer wear his official army pilot uniform. So, in order not to display the dissensions which have agitated the royal family for more than a year - amplified by the interview given to Oprah Winfrey by Meghan and Harry - the queen decided: no one will wear military uniform. Princes William, Andrew or Charles will wear a suit and tie like Prince Harry.

As for the long-awaited image of William alongside his little brother Harry, it will not take place. In the procession that will follow the Land Rover which will bring the coffin of Prince Philip to the chapel, the husband of Kate Middleton and the husband of Meghan Markle will be separated by their cousin Peter Phillips, the son of Princess Anne. Elizabeth II will bring up the rear in a Bentley at the end of the procession.
