Donald Trump plans to move forward again in the 2024 US presidential election

Although never admitting his defeat at the hands of Joe Biden, President of the United States Donald Trump reportedly began preparing plans to run for the presidential election (pilpres) 2024. Two sources close to the White House provided this exclusive information to Axios, Monday (9/11) / 2020) noon local time. The 74-year-old president is said to have informed his advisers that he would return to the presidential race for the next four years.

Surely this news is a clear signal that Trump knows very well he has lost to Biden. However, so far he has chosen to take legal action to challenge the validity of the presidential election results, which he claims are fraudulent. The US constitution allows former presidents to re-run for two consecutive terms.

Follow in the footsteps of Grover Cleveland? Trump's plan is not without precedent. History records that Grover Cleveland is the only president who has served two consecutive terms. Cleveland was elected president for the first time in the 1884 presidential election. He failed to win the second term in the 1888 presidential election, but came back forward and was elected in the 1892 presidential election.

Trump has huge political capital. The real estate tycoon is back outperforming the pollsters' predictions, where he is predicted to lose badly. The national vote soared from 62.9 million to 71.6 million in the 2020 presidential election. This acquisition is the second largest in history after Biden. This figure is also bigger than that achieved by former President Barack Obama who was elected twice in the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections. Trump's vote achievement is phenomenal given the controversy and chaos that has occurred during his nearly four years in office. Not to be left behind, he was also impeached by the House of Representatives (US House of Representatives), caught in a number of scandals, and failed to control the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic which has killed 244,000 US citizens.

Support for Melania Trump's husband has not wavered among loyal supporters in the small, rural area, particularly male voters with blue collars without a university education. The slight shift in support from Hispanic and Afro-American voters for Trump can also convince him that he has won the hearts of these two blocks of voters who have always been loyal to elect Democrats. Trump also controls the Republican Party's political apparatus, where he has positioned loyalists to fill key party positions. It will almost certainly be difficult to prevent him from winning the Republican nomination again if he is to return to the White House.

Challenges to come back But, of course, Trump's plan is not without challenges. His age, which will reach 78 years in the upcoming presidential election, could be a barrier. However, Trump supporters warned that Joe Biden himself would be 78 when he was sworn in on January 20, 2021. Another obstacle is that there will be a lot of new blood of Republican politicians who are also eyeing the presidency. The names that have been tipped off are Vice President Mike Pence, former US Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Nikki Haley, a trio of Florida politicians, Governor Ron DeSantis, Senator Marco Rubio, and Rick Scott. Other names interested in running are Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton, Missouri Senator Josh Hawley, and Maryland Governor Larry Hogan.

Are these politicians willing to pave the way for Trump? This question is too early to answer. History also notes that it is not easy for former presidents to get tickets for presidential candidates again. Former Presidents Martin Van Buren, Ulysses S Grant, and Theodore Roosevelt failed to reclaim presidential nominations even though they were still popular with parties and voters. Especially for Grant and Roosevelt, the 18th and 26th presidents of the US have served two terms and at that time are eyeing a third term because it is still permitted by the constitution. If Trump finally chooses to retire from practical politics, his sons Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump will be the two strongest candidates to continue Trump's service on the US national political scene.
