Meghan Markle's Favorite Foods

The future royal loves pasta, fries, and wine.

It's no secret that the British royal family has some interesting eating habits. From avoiding garlic (the Queen hates it), to abstaining from all shellfish, there's a very specific way royals are expected to eat.

Enter: gorgeous royal-to-be Meghan Markle. The self-proclaimed foodie and California native has revealed her love of food, wine, and the art of cooking. While Markle sticks to a healthy diet, she doesn't believe in depriving herself.

"I think if you deprive yourself of anything you're just going to crave it more, so for me it's just finding that balance," Markle told Shape Magazine. "Eating really good during the week and then treating yourself to whatever it is that you want over the weekend."

Here are some of the future royal's favorite foods.

1. Pasta

As Markle's now-deleted Instagram posts revealed, she's a die-hard pasta fan. "When I'm traveling, I won't miss an opportunity to try great pasta," Markle told Delish in an interview. She added that dinner on a typical night is pasta with zucchini, lots of Parmesan, and a glass of wine. But Markle's zucchini pasta sauce has a special twist: she slow-cooks the zucchini for four or five hours and then tosses it with pasta. "The sauce gets so creamy you'd swear there's tons of butter and oil in it, but it's just zucchini, water and a little bouillon," Markle said to Delish.

In another interview with EyeSwoon, a food blog founded by Athena Calderone, Markle said that a simple cacio and pepe pasta is a go-to recipe she could make with her eyes closed.

2. Acai Bowls

Markle has shared that a healthy acai bowl is her one of her go-to breakfasts. She made her favorite acai bowl recipe on EyeSwoon, as seen in the Twitter photos above, which includes bananas, berries, almond milk, coconut flakes, manuka honey, and bee pollen.

3. Fries

Okay, so the future royal is all of us with this one: Markle loves fries. "I could eat French fries all day," she said, according to Cosmopolitan UK. "I love carbs–who doesn’t love a carbohydrate?" She once revealed to Delish that "french fries and vino are my vices." Same here, Meghan.

4. Fish tacos

Markle is a huge fan of fish tacos, crediting her native California as the place she discovered her favorite food. "Being from Los Angeles, I was conditioned to like Baja-style food from the womb," Markle told Today. She also shared how she makes her own fish tacos at home: "Grill some peppers and onions and a couple filets of fish (a flaky white fish works best). Season everything with salt and pepper, a little lime and stuff it all inside of a warm corn tortilla. Few bites of food make me happier than that."

5. Sushi

In keeping with her love of seafood, Markle is a sushi fan. She described "perfect sushi" as an essential part of her healthy diet to EyeSwoon, adding that Sushi Park in Los Angeles is one of her all-time favorite restaurants. Another one of her favorite spots is Sugarfish, according to Meghan's Mirror.

6. Watermelon

Markle enjoys this healthy snack with a variety of seasonings. "I have always loved watermelon and relish any opportunity to eat it, whether plain or diced up with feta and mint and tossed with a little olive oil," Markle revealed to Today. "It makes me think of summertime. On set and at home, I try to always have a container of watermelon sprinkled with cinnamon because it elevates the flavor just a notch, and makes it feel special."

7. Roast Chicken

In an interview with Good Housekeeping back in 2016, Markle revealed a "perfectly roasted chicken" to be among her favorite foods. "If you have an Ina Garten–level roasted-chicken recipe, it's a game changer," Markle said. "I bring that to dinner parties and make a lot of friends."

Indeed, Markle may have been making Ina Garten's famous Engagement Roast Chicken recipe when Prince Harry popped the question. Their sweet proposal story reveals that the couple were having a "cozy night in" at home while roasting a chicken when Prince Harry got down on one knee to propose. All together now: awww!

8. Hot sauce

In an interview posted on the Tig in August 2016, Markle revealed that everything tastes better with a little "hot sauce! I love a kick to my food."

9. Eggs

Markle has shared her love of eggs on her now-deleted social media accounts. Her typical breakfast when she's not filming is an omelette with fresh herbs, cheese, and toast, she told Delish.

10. Quinoa

Markle revealed that quinoa, with a bit of seasoning and some vegetables added in, is one of her go-to staples.

"At the start of each week, I generally cook a box of quinoa, and while it's simmering, I sauté onions, garlic and any veggies I have on hand in a separate pan," Markle told Today. "I season the vegetables with Spike, a seasoning blend my mom always used when I was growing up, or a little Bragg Liquid Aminos. I always add crushed red pepper and chopped fresh herbs. Toss this veggie mixture into the finished quinoa and eat it as a side dish, poured on top of a kale salad, or as an easy snack."

11. Mac and Cheese

Markle is not afraid to indulge in a childhood favorite—mac and cheese. "I now buy the Annie’s organic one if I’m craving it, but I throw some frozen peas into it and have this gooey simple childlike meal," Markle told EyeSwoon. "I used to cook it for the kids I would babysit and I always enjoyed feeling like a kid and eating it with them."

12. Wine

Markle has commented on her love of wine in multiple interviews. The former actress has been spotted enjoying a glass of wine on her close friend Jessica Mulroney's Instagram, as seen above.

Among her all-time favorite bottles? Tignanello, a wine she loves so much it served as the inspiration behind the name of her now-shuttered lifestyle website, The Tig.

"Tignanello is a full-bodied red wine that I tried about seven years ago," Markle once said, according to People. “In wine circles, it is nicknamed ‘Tig.’ It was my first moment of getting it—I finally understood what people meant by the body, structure, finish, legs of wine. The TIG is my nickname for me getting it. Not just wine, but everything.”

And, as any good wine drinker would do, Markle switches to a lighter wine in the summer, like a rosé, Delish reports.
