'Friends' stars Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer admit they liked each other when the series started, but they never got to be together
Friends co-stars Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer have confessed that they were very much in love with each other at the start of the hit comedy series, but they kept this up in a professional manner.
The two actors, known for their roles as the on-and-off couple Rachel Green and Ross Geller, have opened up about their feelings for each other during the unscripted special, Friends: The Reunion, on HBO Max, released Thursday.
Friends: The Reunion, is a special presented by James Corden that focuses on the 6 main stars: Aniston, Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe Buffay), Courteney Cox (Monica Geller), Matthew Perry (Chandler Bing) and Matt LeBlanc (Joey Tribbiani), recalling the successful series that lasted 10 years.
When the host asked if there was any off-screen romance between the Friends stars, Aniston automatically turned her gaze to Schwimmer.
"The first season, he was very in love with Jen," has confessed Schwimmer. "And I think at some point we were both in love with each other."
The actor has gone on to say that they never acted on their feelings for each other because they were never single at the same time.
"It was as if two boats passed because one of us was always in a relationship and we never crossed that line," explained Schwimmer. "We respect that."
In response, LeBlanc jokingly blurted out: "Lies ...".
Jennifer Aniston wanted to explain something more about that feeling of liking each other that they both had, while she mentioned the iconic first kiss between Ross and Rachel in the comedy, which took place during the second season, episode 7.
"I remember once saying to David, 'It's going to be a bummer if the first time you and I kiss is to be on national television.'
"Sure enough, the first time we kissed was in that cafeteria. So, we channeled all our love and adoration to Ross and Rachel."
David Schwimmer has also released some comments recalling how he and Jennifer flirted when the cameras weren't recording.
"I think back to the first two years when we had rehearsal breaks," he recalls. "There were times when we cuddled up on a couch. And I was like, 'How come the others didn't know we were in love with each other?'
"We were clear about it," Cox intervened.
Coutney Cox has commented that she had re-watched the scene where Ross and Rachel finally kissed for the first time and she began to cry. The Scream actress also added that if her two companions had dated and then separated, the series might not have been so good.
"The tension was just palpable," she explains. "It was perfect. I'm really glad they didn't."
