Before the creation of the Nara in 1934 (National Archives and Records Administration), it was up to the former American presidents to create (or not) a library in their name. Libraries today managed by universities, private foundations or the states that have hosted them. It is since the presidency of Franklin Roosevelt (1933-1945), who wanted a place to preserve his archives, that the Nara has organized this network of 14 libraries set up in the respective states of origin of each former leader (including the one dedicated to Barack Obama in Chicago, not yet open).
In these places, documents, artefacts and even state gifts are kept, and exhibitions relating to the life and career of the former president are organized.
