Prince Harry Admits to Watching The Crown and Even Has an Actor in Mind to Play Him
The Duke of Sussex shared what he really thinks about seeing his family's life portrayed on-screen.
Even Prince Harry can't resist a couch-bound binge of The Crown.
During a surprise interview on last night's Late Late Show with James Corden, the Duke of Sussex revealed that he has in fact watched the hit Netflix show, which portrays Queen Elizabeth II's life on the throne, as well as the royal family at large. During the chat, Harry admitted that he understands the show for what it is—a scripted drama based on real-life events—and said that he'd rather indulge in watching a fictionalized version of his family's life on-screen than consume tabloid fodder that claims to be the truth.
"They don't pretend to be news. It's fictional, but it's loosely based on the truth," said Harry during the segment. "Of course it's not strictly accurate … but it gives you a rough idea about what that lifestyle—the pressures of putting duty and service above family and everything else—what can come from that."
Harry continued, "I'm way more comfortable with The Crown than I am seeing the stories written about my family or my wife or myself. Because it's the difference between fiction, take it how you will, but this is being reported on as fact because you're supposedly news. I have a real issue with that."
The duke also wasn't against throwing out a casting suggestion for an actor he said would make a good Harry, referencing Billions star Damian Lewis (whom he mistakenly called Daniel Lewis before Corden corrected him). Corden, of course, then offered himself to play the role of Prince William, to which Harry responded, "It's not great casting, but it is casting."
The 17-minute interview saw Harry discuss a range of topics with his friend and late-night host, but it also allowed Sussex fans to glimpse the prince in a funnier, more casual light. Harry and Corden cracked plenty of jokes as they took an open-top bus tour of Los Angeles. The hilarious jaunt included a trip to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air mansion (where Harry also rapped the show's iconic intro), teatime atop the bus (with Harry letting some profanity slip when the snack setup inevitably tipped over), and a friendly competition at the Spartan Race's obstacle course.
