Alec Baldwin accidentally kills a woman while filming
Halyna Hutchins, 42, died and Joel Souza, 48, suffered injuries on the set in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The facts and authorship of the shots were confirmed by Juan Ríos, a spokesman for the sheriff's office in that city. The circumstances of the shooting are under investigation.
The shots occurred at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, during a scene that was being rehearsed for filming
Ríos explained that the shots occurred at the Bonanza Creek ranch, shortly before two in the afternoon local time this Thursday, in the middle of a scene that was being rehearsed for filming.
"We are trying to determine how and what type of projectiles were used with those weapons that were originally props," said the spokesman. The sheriff's office had not filed charges last night against anyone in connection with the shooting.
Hutchins was airlifted to a Santa Fe hospital, with nothing being done for her life. Souza was admitted by ambulance to another health center.
According to the media, Baldwin, who is also a producer on the film, did not respond to questions from reporters. One of his representatives described what happened as an “accident”. Local press reported that the actor was seen crying outside the sheriff's office, although he was unable to utter a word.
One of Baldwin's representatives called what happened an "accident."
Only a few hours before the event, the actor posted on Instagram some photographs in which he appeared dressed in his costumes for the film, including the mark of a false wound on his torso.
Filming has been postponed until at least November. The film tells the story of a 13-year-old boy who had to take care of his younger siblings after the death of his parents in the 1980s. The teenager then fled, with his grandfather, a role played by Baldwin, after he was sentenced to hang for the accidental death of a rancher.
There are precedents for such tragedies. In 1993, Brando Lee, son Bruce Lee, a martial arts teacher and screen icon, died when he was hit by a 44 calire bullet while filming a deadly scene in The Crown. That weapon was supposed to fire a blank cartridge. The autopsy indicated that the bullet was embedded in the spine.
The echo of 1984 also resonates when actor Jon-Erik Hexum was shot in the head with a prop pistol. He pretended to play Russian roulette with a Magnum on the television set of the series "Cover Up."
On her website, Hutchins explains that she is originally from Ukraine and that she grew up on a Soviet military base in the Arctic Circle. She studied journalism in her country and film in Los Angeles. She in her profile confesses that she was a tireless dreamer and an adrenaline junkie. In her social networks, she had posted several photos of the montage of ‘Rust’ and even a video from this past Tuesday in which she was riding a horse.
Her death was described as "devastating news" by the leaders of the film union. "The details are still not clear and we are waiting to know more," they said in her statement. "It is a terrible loss," she lamented.
Baldwin is an Emmy-winning, veteran actor with a long career. His fame in the United States has been marked in recent years by his humorous portrayal of Donald Trump on the Saturday Night Live program.
Nor have he lacked occasions in which, without any fiction, he was persecuted by the police. He was arrested in 2014 for riding his bicycle on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, where he resides, in the opposite direction. He had no documentation and the agents who transferred him to the police station accused him of belligerent conduct and disorder. In 2019 he pleaded guilty in criminal court to attacking a man in a dispute over a parking lot.
