BRITNEY SPEARS GETS BACK HER FREEDOM; THE GUARDIANSHIP THAT CONTROLLED HER LIFE FOR 13 YEARS COME TO AN END
Judge Brenda Penny terminated the guardianship she started in 2008
After more than 13 years, 3 documentaries and heartbreaking court testimony, Britney Spears is finally free. As hundreds of her followers lined the Los Angeles courthouse with posters, Britney-inspired outfits and megaphones, Supreme Court Justice Brenda Penny ended the guardianship that controlled her life and finances for more than one of each.
The spotlight and pressure have been on Judge Penny for the past year. "Guardianship of the person and property of Britney Jean Spears is no longer necessary," she said. On June 23, during a hearing, ‘The Princess of Pop’ made it clear that she wanted the “abusive” guardianship to end once and for all and that she did not want to be evaluated psychologically. Her wishes were fulfilled earlier today when Penny pointed out that since it had been a voluntary conservatorship, "there was no need for a statement of capacity."
According to CNN, Britney did not attend the hearing in person or virtually. Her attorney Mathew Rosengart told the courts that a "safety net" will be established for her finances and personal care. Britney's assets will now be transferred from the temporary guardian to her estate.
Rosengart held a press conference after the hearing ended, calling it a "monumental day" for the singer. "As of today, with immediate effect, the guardianship has ended both for the person and for her estate," he said outside the court. "What's next for Britney, and this is the first time this can be said in about a decade, is up to one person, Britney," Rosengart said.
After the news broke, Birtney's fiancĂ©, Sam Asghari, posted a pink square on Instagram with the word "FREEDOM." “Today history was made. Britney is free! ”Asghari wrote in the caption.
