Game Of Thrones: The most shocking moments of the hit HBO series
WITH the premiere of season six just weeks away, the anticipation to find out what jaw-dropping twists are in store for our favourite Game of Thrones characters is certainly reaching breaking point.
The hit HBO fantasy drama is known for surprising viewers in the most unlikely way and with promises that the upcoming series will be “insane”, it seems only right to round up the most shocking moments so far. In no particular order…
Jon Snow’s death
The Night’s Watch mutiny left viewers in uproar when the Lord Commander, Jon Snow, was left to die after he was brutally stabbed. Most shocking of all was when little Olly finished him off. Since that fateful episode, the question on everybody’s lips has been “Is Jon Snow really dead?” There’s not much longer to find out.
In what was one of the most exhilarating, and terrifying, endings to an episode of Game Of Thrones, viewers forgot about who was trying to sit on the Iron Throne and bore witness to a much more horrifying problem, which of course, was the white walkers. As they descended on Hardhome while Jon Snow tried to persuade the Wildings to move to Castle Black, it was like a scene straight from a horror film.
Princess Shireen’s death
Only on Game Of Thrones would you see a King sacrifice his daughter in order to win a battle - that he subsequently lost. In one of the cruelest scenes, viewers watched as Princess Shireen was tied to a stake and burned alive, despite desperate pleas from her mother Selyse to stop.
The Red Wedding
It may have been all the way back in season three but who could forget the bloody Red Wedding?! Only a fool would believe Walder Frey would happily accept Robb Stark’s decision to marry someone other than his betrothed daughter. In the gruesome last five minutes, viewers lost Catelyn Stark, Robb, his new wife Talisa and his beloved wolf Grey Wind. Have you ever sobbed so much?
The Purple Wedding
If the people of Westeros hadn’t already learned that weddings don’t quite go to plan after the Red Wedding then surely they must have realised when King Joffrey was poisoned following his marriage to Margaery Tyrell. He was the one everyone wanted to see overthrown but that didn’t make his death any less shocking as his face turned bright purple and he violently asphyxiated.
Cersei’s walk of shame
Queen Cersei was always viewed as a woman you wouldn’t want to cross throughout the show but in the season five finale, viewers saw her at her most vulnerable. Desperate to be reunited with her son Tommen and escape the prison she had been locked away in by the Faith Militant she agreed to be publicly punished. She was forced to walk through the streets of King’s Landing naked while crowds hurled food and a lot worse at her.
Sansa's Wedding Night
You would feel sorry for anyone who was going to marry the ruthless Ramsay Bolton. The wedding night would always be an unpleasant one for his new wife but nothing could prepare you for Sansa's rape scene where Theon Greyjoy stood in the corner and watched on. Viewers were in uproar that Sansa was a victim to Ramsay after the writer's chose to make her suffer even more than she already had done.
Daenerys' dragons
Everyone thought Daenerys was crazy when she climbed onto the top of Khal Drogo's funeral pyre with three eggs but she certainly proved them all wrong when she rose from the ashes with a trio of baby dragons. They have since become uncontrollable but they served their mother well when she set the Unsullied army and slaves free.
Ned Stark’s death
Game of Thrones has become notorious for allowing fans to fall in love with a character before killing them off in a gloriously gory manner, and sadly, that was the case with Ned Stark. He was the moral compass of the first season whose untimely end was the tipping point for Robb Stark who raised an army against the Lannister's who killed his father.
Oberyn Martell’s death
Prince Oberyn's death is burned into every viewer's memory as one of the most gruesome and difficult to stomach. When he stepped up to be Tyrion's champion in a trial by combat against The Mountain, you'd be forgiven for thinking he might actually win when he had his opponent wounded and lying on his back. However, this being Game Of Thrones, Oberyn was never going to be victorious. Instead The Mountain grabbed his head, pushed his eyes into his head with his thumbs and crushed his skull. Isn't that just delightful?
