Donald Trump, a born-again Christian ?: This is what an evangelical leader proclaims
"I think there is hope for him and there is hope for us," says James Dobson.
The Republican candidate for the US presidency, Donald Trump, has strengthened his faith by coming to "accept Jesus Christ" and is now a "born again Christian," according to James Dobson, one of the country's evangelical leaders.
Dobson, founder of the organization Focus on the Family, witnessed this Tuesday Trump's meeting with hundreds of Christian conservatives in New York, in the framework of which he said in an interview that he knows the person who had led Trump to Jesus Christ, without specifying his name.
"I do not know when this happened, but not long ago. I think he really consecrated himself and is a Christian baby," he said, quoted by 'The New York Times'.
Last year Trump made several stumbles talking about faith, such as when he said that he had never apologized to God. On another occasion, after announcing that the Bible was his favorite book during his election campaign, he refused to reveal what his favorite verse was.
In addition, Presbyterian Trump questioned the faith of his rival Hillary Clinton, a Methodist, during a meeting with evangelical leaders on Tuesday, expressing himself in the following terms: "We do not know anything about Hillary when it comes to religion."
Trump won the majority of Evangelical votes in the Republican primaries, although some conservative Christian leaders preferred to keep a distance.
Although Dobson admitted that the billionaire mogul does not fit the typical evangelist mold for "not knowing our language", he urged showing greater leniency towards the candidate: "He did not grow up in an environment like us."
"I think there is hope for him and there is hope for us," he added.
