Instagram removes 'inappropriate' pic of Taika Waititi: 'No, that's not my crotch'

Instagram removed a photo of Taika Waititi it mistakenly believed to be inappropriate.

The Kiwi filmmaker reposted the image of himself, saying: "Instagram took this picture down because... Umm... Well the thing is... Ok I have no idea."

The photo, taken by the French artist and photographer JR at an Oscars afterparty hosted by Guy Oseary and Madonna, depicts Waititi posing with a life-size image of himself printed onto vinyl and the Academy Award he had just won for Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit.

Waititi is gripping the Oscar in his right hand and the bunched-up sheet in the other, something Instagram appears to have misinterpreted.

"It's a picture of me holding a picture of me," Waititi wrote. "And no, that's not my crotch."

More than 100,000 people had liked the post within an hour of it being posted, and several of Waititi's A-list mates had jumped in to comment.

"Vulgar," quipped actor Ryan Reynolds, who worked with Waititi in the 2011 film Green Lantern. The pair reunited for upcoming sci-fi comedy Free Guy.

"Obscene!" added House actress Olivia Wilde. "My virgin eyes! How dare you."

Instagram's community guidelines ban "photos, videos, and some digitally-created content that show sexual intercourse, genitals, and close-ups of fully-nude buttocks," although "photos of post-mastectomy scarring and women actively breastfeeding are allowed," as is nudity in photos of paintings or sculptures.

The photo of Waititi, and others like it of Oscar winners including Laura Dern and Renee Zellwegger, was first published on Time magazine's website.
