Bill Stevenson: Here's what we know about Jill Biden's ex-husband
People are more curious than ever about Joe Biden's personal life, especially when it comes to his relationships with his wife and children. His wife Dr. Jill Biden is actually his second wife, who was previously married to another woman, who tragically died along with their daughter in a car accident in 1972. It is also a second marriage for Jill, and unfortunately, her ex-husband. Bill Stevenson is already throwing a wrench in Joe's bid for the White House.
Jill and Joe Biden met in 1975, when she was still in college, after her brother Frank introduced them, per Vogue. Jill told the outlet all about the couple's adorable-cute reunion.
"I was a senior, and I had been hanging out with guys in jeans and clogs and T-shirts, and he came to the door and he had on a sport coat and loafers, and I thought, 'God, this is never going to work, not in a million years,'" Jill explained. "He was nine years older than me! But we went out to see A Man and a Woman in the Philadelphia theater, and we really pulled it off. When we got home…he shook my hand good night…I went upstairs and called my mom at 1:00am. and I said, 'Mom, I finally met a gentleman.
Jill and Joe were married just two years later. If Biden was the gentleman, what about his ex Bill Stevenson? This is what we know.
Bill Stevenson says Joe and Jill Biden are lying about how they met
In a new book, Bill Stevenson claims that he and Dr. Jill Biden worked on Joe Biden's first campaign in 1972. He said, per The Daily Mail, "Jill and I sat in the Bidens' kitchen. We work on his campaign. I gave his first campaign $10,900, in cash."
At the time, Biden was still married to his late wife. But Stevenson believes Joe and Jill's romance sparked then, when he claims they grew suspiciously close and a man saw them driving in a car together. Stevenson said he asked Jill to leave the house afterward. He added: "I considered Joe a friend. I'm not surprised he fell in love with Jill. Everyone who meets Jill falls in love with her immediately. It's hard not to."
Both Jill and Joe Biden deny they had an affair. Jill tells a different story about her marriage to Bill Stevenson in her book, by The Daily Mail. They tied the knot when she was just 18 and she says she quickly fell apart. "We were young, and it wasn't long before we grew in different directions. I tried to make the relationship work. I thought I could bring our marriage back to life," she writes. But it does not work.
No matter how they met, the Bidens have been together for more than four decades, so something must be working.
Bill Stevenson died and came back to life
When he's not writing memoirs, Bill Stevenson is also an entrepreneur. He founded a horticultural business called Sticky Pots and invented a "support system" The Daily Mail, which he sold to Scotts Miracle-Gro. Before that, he founded a live music club called the Stone Globe in Newark, Delaware, which Rolling Stone once called the "best kept secret in rock and roll" (via Town Square Delaware). Stevenson played soccer at the University of Delaware, also winning a gold medal for shot presentation at the National Senior Games.
In 2018, Stevenson suffered a "massive" heart attack in New York City, according to ABC News. He actually died for six minutes before being revived, per The Daily Mail. After getting better, he dedicated himself to making sure every police patrol car has a defibrillator.
"I had already started the book," Stevenson told The Daily Mail of the scare incident. "I came back from the dead to finish it."
Stevenson is obviously a character, even if he and Jill Biden didn't work out.
