Actress Katherine Heigl, better known as Dr. Izzie Stevens from 'Grey's Anatomy', was the surprise of last year's Emmy Awards. Her work on the ABC series was recognized with the award for best supporting actress. But this year she will not have to prepare a speech in case she is awarded again.
Heigl has withdrawn from the Emmy race as her character has lost presence on the series "thanks" to the Hollywood writers' strike.
The American actress has made this decision because, according to what she told the Los Angeles Times, "I don't feel that this season has had a relevant role to justify an Emmy nomination and, in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy, I withdraw my name for nomination."
Katherine Heigl added, "Also, I didn't want to take away an actress who did have a good character." This circumstance is not new, since there are several actors who have previously withdrawn their candidacy on the grounds that they had already been sufficiently recognized by the American Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Among those who withdrew after winning an Emmy several times include Candice Bergen ('Murphy Brown') and Bill Cosby ('The Cosby Show').
The race for the Emmys has already begun. The long list of artists who "compete" for an award in recognition of her work has been announced in recent days. Although the final nominations will be said on July 17.
The 2006 edition had its own name: Grey. 'Grey's Anatomy' was the most successful debut series in the 2005 edition, which made it the top series on ABC and one of the most watched in the US in the last three years.
According to the 'Los Angeles Times' article, "what -Katherine Heigl- deserved after winning the Emmy was a great role in the series, not reducing Izzie's presence", adding that the decision made by her seemed to be "a form of internal protest" with respect to the producers and writers of the series. No representative of the ABC network or Walt Disney Co. -the 'major' to which she belongs- has spoken about it.
Recently it has been known that the actress will be the protagonist of a drama about sects, entitled 'Escape'. The film is based on the life of American Carolyn Jessop (Katherine Heigl), who grew up in a polygamous fundamentalist sect and had to marry an older man as a teenager. After almost 20 years of marriage, the woman and her eight children managed to flee. Heigl will also produce the film. The actress has participated in other films, such as '27 dresses'.
